I am so incredibly frustrated.
New here obviously. :)

For some reason when I went to install my new Seagate HD (have a separate boot drive)
and my PC froze when loading their install cd.
After several tries, I resign myself to skipping the wizard at this point and doing the job in Windows.
At bootup I received an error message when trying to get to windows after POST:

"Winows failed to load, C:\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt".
WTH happened?
Tried to use repair option with XP cd, but that just took me into DOS and I'm not familiar with the switches to know what to do next.
I've installed XP several times before, however, it didn't require a reformat.
XP couldn't find my OS on the boot drive.
So I reinstalled XP this time with a fresh installation.

Question is: what happened to that file that it was missing or corrupted and why?
How do I overcome this should it happen again so I don't have to do another XP installation requiring a reformat of my boot drive?

im sory before if my english is not good as well. :D
i think your OS is damage or infect with virus
1. try to reinstal your windows , may be your system is infect with virus
2. then instal again your driver for Main board and graphic card driver.
3. before you instal any program, plese instal your antivirus with new database update. than scan your PC.

I have no cd for the MB.
Doesn't matter anyway, XP is running and I've rebooted several times.
So I will assume it's fixed.

Strange how the Seagate cd causes this to hang, but I noticed last night that if I wait long enough (too long IMO) the program will begin to work so I was able to format my new HD before re-installing XP.
At first, I thought it was a virus or e-contagion of some kind: that is a critical file I lost.
But after some thought I believe it was due to my impatience in switching off the pc to reboot when the program hung for minutes at a time.
I could be wrong, but thanks for attempting to point me in the right direction.

BTW, I understood your English just fine. :)
