With the prices of AMD processors going down my friend is I told my friend its time to upgrade his 3 year old box. He already has HD, DVD-rom, keyb/mouse, monitor, case but what i need:

motherboard, processor, 1gig memory and PCI-E gfx card.

Keep in mind that his previous set up was:

Pentium IV 2.8
256MB memory
on board graphics card
120 HD
250 power supply
w/ only PCI slot not even AGP

He is a converted CS Source addict and has been taking over my computer time since he started playing it. Main usage will be light gaming, and watching movies and such.

I know its a challenge to put together with price cap being under $350 and some of you are probably laughing at me right now but I know its possible.

He needs a new psu as well. 250w isnt going to cut it, not even close.

3600+ Brisbane - $75
Biostar TForce 550 - $80
FSP Group AX400-PN - $44
G.Skilll 1gb DDR2-553 - $51
Evga 7600gt - $110

Total - $360

Only $10 over, it's a decent system by modern standards, and it'll kick the living crap out of his old box.

Only thing I would change about that is getting this power supply instead:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817190011

It's a tad bit better than the previous and cheaper as well (after rebate).

Note: If he can afford to pay an extra 40-50 bucks, he can get 2 gigs of ram instead of 1, and that should help the build even further.

You might want to wait until April 22 when there might (rumored) be large price cuts in many processors; as this is the date that Intel is supposed to introduce some new processors.

Better if he stays away from ebay or he'll be getting a grass chopper instead of a CPU or comething like that.
