cpu-z

hello everyone, im new here and i need help.
Ive tried to use cpu-z on my pc,
when i start the app my pc freezes in place at desktop and i have to hit the pwr button.
I also tried another program called Everest home edition and the same thing happens.
i started with these because of repeated crashes in the recently released game Stalker.While i have had occasional crashes while running other games this has been the worst.
After running Stalker,cpu-z and everest succsefully on a far lesser system i have come to suspect somthing is wrong, here are my specs.
amd 64bit-3700-2.2gig cpu
mobo -BFG N4V ultra pci xpress
memory- corsair matched dual channel memory 3200
gpu -BFG 7900 gtoc 256 meg
hd seagate 120 gig ide HD
pw supply ultraxfinity 500 watt
onboard sound realtek ac-97
winxp pro newly installed that was the first thing i tried.
I can post a dxdiag if that would help with anything.
Any help or info would be very much appreciated
