I been think about getting a 8800GTS 320MB,but i'm reconsidering if i truly want dx 10 since i'm tired of giving in to bill gates crap.

So if i decide to get a X1950Pro instead, how far can it usually OC stable?

Edit: What about a 7900GS,how far can it reach stable?

The x1950 pro is a VERY touchy OCer (and a bad one too) Even underclocking causes blank screens or distorted screens. You need to be real careful with it. The vram particularly is extremely sensitive to changes in clock speed.

@mpilch: You know anyone who knows alot about vga bios editing/flashing, specifically ATI? I found out that its my bios after all, as I opened a bios file i got online with RaBiT and it had the environment controls enabled, whereas the one in my vga eeprom didnt. I'm not sure if this .rom file is compatible with my card, since there is little info on it, and the info in RaBiT is beyond my understanding. I was hoping someone could compare the two files and see if the new one would be compatible.

I have only done it once, on a 9800 pro. I didnt bother to check the manufacturer of the VRAM coz it had the little zalman HS on the chips and I didnt want to remove them in case I couldnt get them back on. That ended with distortions of all colours and shapes  But I made a backup first, so I was OK. Thing is, there is no indication that I can see as to what RAM this BIOS is for. All I know is the CAS latency is the same, ie 9. Its about the only thing other than clocks I can change.

How much power does the 7300gt use?

It adds about 3A to the +12v power ussage and almost an 1A to the 3.3v power ussage of my system. So without the card i'm using about 24A on teh +12v rails. But that's caculated as if the system was under a 100% load. I run both cards because i want the full ability of the 7900gs on my games. If i hve both of my monitors connected to the 7900 i don't get as good a FPS because the card it doing almost twice the work running 2 monitors.

Hey does this mean when I play games I should disable my tv-out and only run my lcd ? BTW I play games on the lcd.

Thx for the tip ... I never really checked to see if the second display actually held back my fps but will do in a couple of minutes. BTW what do you think of my psu ?

Reply to smartel7070

I dont think disabling unused outputs ever increased my fps much, but then I tested it on NOLF2 I think which is hardly demanding. It is one of the most fun games I've ever played tho :D

Just played stalker with the tv-out disabled and couldn't really tell if the fps increased but definately the game was smoother, less frame drops than with tv on. Thx for the tip !

You have a particular brand in mind ?eVGA,i might or might not use the step-up program.

Btw if i got a eVGA 7900GS,would i be able to "step-up" to a 8800GTS 320MB within 90 days or does it only work with the same generation of cards?

Unlikely. Its a mediocre OCer on the core and if you can squeeze 2mhz out of the mem, you are doing well.

It performs much the same as an OC 7900gs anyway, so theres no reason to have to OC it further, unless you want to catch up with the next card up the performance list.

I've seen others push the core up to 661MHz and the memory beyond 800MHz (1600MHz effective). Personally, I can hit 661MHz stable on my core but the memory won't budge past 722MHz.

The biggest issue with the 1950PRO is that the card is undervolted thus severely limiting the amount of overclock that can be achieved.

Just get the dang 8800GTS 320MB. It's not that expensive compared to it's higher siblings and it just kicks everyone's but underneither it. Technically if you aren't going to Vista, you aren't running DX10 drivers and technically you aren't giving into Mr. BG. From what I hear the game companies are going to determine when we go to DX10 and since no one is buying Vista, no one can support DX10 therefore what game developer is going to make a game that no one can play because they havn't gone to Vista. From what I hear M$ might cave and put out DX10 drivers for XP... WE WIN, but in the end we will eventually all go to Vista once a SP come out and it supports more stuff. Back in 2003 didn't we all swear we wouldn't load XP???? 8O
