Okay, it's an old system. Sorry.

I've had a problem for awhile. I seem to have a conflict between my CPU and my GPU trying to take control of my system's video.

When I play games they are often really dark. Then I come back to desktop and it's dark, I open up the advanced settings for my GPU, hit the colour and the picture pops back to normal brightness.

ATI 9600 Radeon
Intel 4 CPU

I get this message in the device manager too:

I checked up latest drivers for the Intel 82865G graphics controller: there are only two versions available: one is not supposed to be used with an external AGP GPU, and the other is only for developers. I tried the for-developers one anyway, but the automatic installer would not install it, and the manual install instructions required me to go to device manager and manually install over my Radeon driver, which I sure as hell am not gong to do.

Am I stuck with a CPU that hates my graphics card??????

Any help would be most appreciated. This is driving me nuts.

Your CPU won't be a conflicting with your GPU.

Like Vern mentioned, since theres a chance that you have integrated video, depending on the bios you need to be sure you have certain things disabled.

For example some integrated video will work with an AGP or PCI-E interfaced card. So you can run more then one monitor and have allot more desktop room.

Chances are, if your integrated video does not have the option to work with other cards, it should be automatically disabled from inserting the AGP card, but all MB vary to their settings.

The bright and darkness you describe would be more of the game and drivers having some kind of problem. Kinda sounds like the games your playing don't exit properly.

The only time I experience the desktop to be bright, (usually end up rebooting) is when the game crashes.

I have looked through the motherboard utilities to try to do this. The latest drivers only give RAID functionality, which has nothing to do with this. Also, I thought that since my monitor is hooked up to my GPU that it wouldn't matter as much.

I have looked long and hard for a way to disable the onboard graphics of my motherboard. Looked in the manual. Went through the BIOS. The only thing there seems to be is a setting in BIOS that lets you switch from AGP/PCI to PCI/AGP control. Whatever that does.

How do you disable onboard graphics for these things?
April 14, 2007 9:43:07 PM

Ur motherboard model don't have integrated graphic because i once use it long time ago (chipset 865PE)
April 14, 2007 9:46:42 PM

Well, if you are all saying there is no conflict what do I do?

I set my advanced settings for the ATI Card to play at max gamma and max brightness. Then I go into certain games and it's like midnight. I set the game's gamma to to absolutely brightest. Nothing.

try swaping ur graphic card with another
If problem persist, try reformat and reinstall windows

If it doesn't have onboard graphics, how come it has a blue plug in the back to plug in a monitor?
April 14, 2007 10:05:45 PM

That isnt for a monitor, it's a serial port.

Okay my bad.

I just stripped out all my ATI drivers to basically take that out of the question.

So now when I boot it goes into a default VGA mode that must be generated by the motherboard (P4P800 deluxe) and this VGA signal is really dark. I am trying to find out how to increase the brightness. So when I reinstall the ATI drivers I don't get this problem again.

I have a feeling if I get another vidcard, it won't matter - I'd need a whole new system. Somehow the damn thing is just set to be dark, and the get games the ATI driver and the default VGA driver confused somehow.

Does someone know how to adjust gamma on a default asus mboard vga driver?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your CPU wont conflict with your video driver, but from what it looks like you might have a conflict somewhere if your motherboard has an integrated video on it. What you need to do when you is list your entire system specs with a program like Everest Home Edition or PC Wizard 2007. Copy the overall system specs and then we can take a look.

The only suggestions I can give you right now are this. When your computer first starts up go into your BIOS and look for an area called chipset and try to disable the onboard video. If you cant find a chipset, look for anything that would resemble the video card settings on your video card. Afterwards what you should try to do is this. Uninstall your video card drivers, and follow the instructions of driver cleaner pro. You need to follow the exact instructions. And then install the latest video drivers for your ATI card and then go from there. I am running an nvidia card but when you install your ATI drivers under somewhere in the monitor there should be an option to adjust your brightness, contrast, Gamma etc. on somewhere in the catalyst control center. If you cant find it please let me know. Private message me more with details and I will see if I can help you out with your problem.

Done all that already. Right now I'm running the machine with no ATI drivers and it is very dark. The ATI card is sitting, doing nothing. I used a utility from ATI that removes all ATI software from the system. The motherboard is providing a VGA signal to the monitor and it is now very dark.

I can't be the ATI Card. It has to be the motherboard VGA.

When the ATI card kicks in it is fine - goes right to the brightness setting I put it at. But sometimes my system pops into a dark mode, and I think it is the motherboard's default VGA driver interferring. It's like the ATI card is fighting with the motherboard for control of the signal, and when I start a game sometimes the game I start decides it wants to listen to the ATI driver, sometimes it wants to listen to the mboard's VGA when it decides the gamma level of the game.

I am thinking about reinstalling the vga.drv and/or vga.dll files in windows, but I don't know exactly where to get those.

Went into the bios. There's nothing that lets you turn off your onboard video on the P4P800 Deluxe. All the drivers listed for the mboard have nothing to do with video or VGA. Maybe there is a generic, default ASUS vga driver but I can't find it.

Okay maybe this is overkill, but I provided my whole system info above, and people still kept telling me I needed to give my "exact system specs" so here is a dxdiag report...

Yeah... That's overkill. You said the have an "Intel 4" Im assuming you meant a P4, what speed? And an ATI 9600, is that an actual 9600, or one of the many different variations, SE, XT, Pro, ect?

optical drive: LITE-ON CD-RW SOHR-5239V
optical drive 2: Memorex 52MAXX 3252AJ1
mobo: Asus P4P800 Deluxe

We still need the make model of your psu and ram.

a b à CPUs
April 15, 2007 5:17:01 AM

Phew.....

Ah full system specs means:

CPU
Video card
Motherboard
Power Supply
Case (if its a temperature/cooling issue)
Sound Card (if its a sound issue)
RAM
CD/DVD rom drives (not usually required)

Dont need all the junk dxdiag spits out lol. Just whats listed above, including model numbers etc.
April 16, 2007 7:29:14 AM

I'm not very familiar with that motherboard, but your best bet is just to start from scratch. Remove any/all drivers that you installed yourself. Ranging from the Motherboard drivers, sound drivers, video drivers, CPU drivers, etc etc. (Try not to format the hard drive but remove all the drivers and follow the driver cleaner pro instructions if possible.)

Afterwards what I would suggest is try to work your way from the ground up and then go from there. I'll see if I can do more digging and try to help you out. There just seem to be some inconstancies in your posts and I'm spending more time trying to get together an idea of what is going on. But I will do whatever I can to help you out man.

Edit: Well I read your post some more and I will try to list the best places to get your drivers. All in all my rundown is this. remove every and all drivers from your computer. Go from the ground up and then reinstall each individual driver. Then go from there, that is what I would do. There is so much technical whatnot and so much bs going on that it's difficult to try and wade through all this but I am going to try and dig to the core of your problem

Yah, I did a scan with Driver Detective and there are a bunch of missing drivers. So I think I will just leave it at that for now - get those drivers upgraded somehow.

Is that a good program, Driver Detective? It seems a lot easier to use it than to try to sift through all these sites getting these things. It seems about half my drivers are out of date, but some I have no idea how to update. Tried updating my Intel 865E, downloaded a program that would do it but it wouldn't work.

The vidcard is a bonafide ATI Radeon 9600, simple as that, from what I can tell. I've looked at device manager and that's what it says.

I don't think this is my ram. I replaced all my ram about 6 months ago, but still had the same problem.

Couldn't tell you what my cpu is exactly.

I fixed the problem with running the game. It has an open that lets you run it in a window, so I do that, and that way my Radeon has guaranteed control over the appearance settings.

Thanks for looking over this.
April 16, 2007 7:52:41 AM

Ok man, if you want to do something right, do it one step at a time. That is the only way your going to actually get the computer working. I gave you the tools, but unless you want to put in the footwork your problem wont be fixed.
April 16, 2007 8:14:55 AM

Well, I already did strip away all my graphics drivers - that I could find at least. I mean there has to be some drivers left, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see anything.

And I ran it in Safe Mode, and in Safe Mode it loaded this VGA driver, and sure enough, the screen is dark with it. So, like, I figure this problem is at the default-video-driver level.

So, again, I looked on the ASUS website, and they have nothing for the P4P800 Deluxe mboard that is about video drivers. So maybe they have a generic vga driver somewhere that isupdated.

I already updated bios recently, too. No change in the issue.

I know that the Intel CPU driver probably needs updating. Maybe you could point me to somewhere that tells how to do that. I tried going to Intel, to no avail. They have a utility that is supposed to tell you what chip you have - but it didn't run on my machine (was corrupted or something). I re-downloaded it - no difference.

Can you tell me to find out what exact CPU I have? All I know is it's Intel 82865G/PE/P/GV/82848P Processor series.

Thanks again.

Hi guys! I'm going to build a PC and I was wondering if there will be conflict between Intel Pentium G840 and PowerColor HD 6870 or do I have to look for different GPU? Thanks! ;)
