Microsoft are going to release DX10 for XP. This is excellent news. The only reason I had to buy Vista has now gone away. The XP version will be called DirectX9.0L but its really DX10, and it supports shader model 4.
Reasons to stay with XP: * better game performance (games on XP are about 15% faster than vista)
* avoid all the DRM in vista that stops you playing your own friggin dvds and media
* no crappy dog-slow aero interface that hides the system from you and keeps asking you "are you REALLY sure" even when doing basic stuff
* less resource hogging CPU and memory usage
* less bloatware
* don't have to pay $300+ for it
*XP will work in as many virtual machines as you want, vista doesn't allow being installed in a VM
* you can upgrade your hardware twice without having to buy the whole OS again ( you can only change the HW once before your vista licence wont ever authenticate again)
* and a new one.... Microsoft have just added a clause to the Vista EULA that prevents you using vista on more than one screen (no projectors, no multiple monitor setups).
Well.. if we are using the inquirer as a source... a more recent one states that Directx 9l is only for Vista and is just a faster version of Directx9...
We wont see a performance increase in games until better hardware and games for DX10 get going. DX9 games will not perform quite as well in Vista HOWEVER with the rapid advancement in video cards in the next few years that performance drop will become negligible
