Not without help. It doesn't have a digital tuner. You'll need a
separate HD tuner that can output to an IEEE-1394 (Firewire) port and
which is compatible with the 40K. Early reports on the LG LST-3410A
HD tuner/DVR were that it worked very well with the 40K's predecessor
(30K) but only partially with the 40K. Don't know if that's changed.
Some cable boxes have 1394 ports, not necessarily active. Mitsubishi
is big on Firewire, so I expect most of their HD receivers have the
port. You'll have to do some homework to put together a working
system.
Eventually somone (JVC or Mits) will produce a D-VHS recorder with
integrated HD tuner, if the format survives long enough. It amazes me
that they didn't do that in the first place. Sort of like selling a
car without a gas tank. Works fine as long as you buy a gas tank on
wheels and a trailer hitch.

can anyone recommed a tuner with IEEE-1394 connector
recording hdtv would be very cool.
The older "archived" Samsung terrestrial receivers, like the SIR-T165, do
have the Firewire port, but it appears that their new ones do not, so I
suppose that it is a cost issue. I still see the SIR-T165 being sold on
eBay, so you can still get one. Other manufacturers may still offer the
Firewire port, and I know that Sony does on their televisions with
integrated tuners, at least with the XBR plasma sets, since that is where I
have my Mitsubishi HS-HD1100U DVHS connected. I'm not sure about their STBs,
however.
