Well, lately I have been thinking about getting a new HD TV. I sense it is
going to cost me big bucks, so I want to make sure that it will be worth the
money.

First, how good is the HD picture over regular analog? I have DirecTv - the
non-hd package, of course, and I can't really complain about the picture. On
the other hand, I have never seen what HD picutures look like, so I have
nothing to compare my current service.

And then, what about features such as CableCards, DVI (?) outputs, etc. Can
anyone provide me with the basics of HD tv?

Thank you in advance...

-Guicho.

I too have DirectTV with the HD receiver, Samsung sir-ts360. This
receiver will allow satellite, OTA (off the air[I use rabbit ears]) or
cable input.

There is not comparision on my panasonic 32' HDTV. Once I saw the HD
signal I watch nothing else. I even stopped using my TVIO because it
doesn't record HD.

Best HD output on my system is component, Y, Pb, Pr. The OTA
reception is just as good or better than satellite in HD so it is
worth the effort to get it to work.

I suggest you get yourself down to a local TV store and look at HD. Go
somewhere they have cable input, so you can see a football game or
prime-time show in HD on a big screen, not just their internal tape (disk?)
loop.

For my money (and that's a good way to put it) HD is dramatically, wildly,
better than standard definition television. With something like a football
game, where there are many shots of distant people who are, in an SD
picture, made up of very few pixels, the difference is just stunning. Once
you see a football game in HD, you are never going to be satisfied with
watching them in SD again.

Keep in mind, though, that HD and big screens go together. Yes, an HD
picture on a 27" screen will be better, but an SD picture is not too bad
that small, either. It's on a 50" or larger screen that you really get the
benefits of HD.
