Probs with booting from CD-ROM

I just acquired a new pc. I've fdisked the hd as well as formated it. But for some reason I can not get the CD rom to install. It keeps saying no drives found. I am using a windows 98 boot disk from another one of my pc's. I also have windows 98b that I'm trying to install and a friend told me to just change the cmos so it boots the cdrom for me.
tried that but no go. What am I doing wrong. All I want to do is install 98b.

Check your ribbon cable connections to the CD ROM and M/B, also the power.

Make sure that you're booting off the disk WITH CDROM support. If that's made sure of, check the connections and also try putting in another CDROM instead just to make sure you haven't got a defective drive.

i am booting with a standard windows 98 startup disk. it has the cd rom support via a menu that pops up. The problem is that when i boot up, it always goes to the a:/ regardless if i make the cd-rom the first to boot or not. should i try to switch the ribbon or fiddle with the jumpers on the cdrom??

Yeah, then you'd probably want to try that. Sounds like your computer doesn't even know that the CDROM drive is there.

If you can see your cdrom in the post, then you can have cdrom support. A 98 boot disk will always go to the A: prompt. Just switch it to E: or whatever the cdrom support gives it. Type in setup and go. Some machines will not boot from a Windows cdrom period . If you already have a boot disk, use it. Then again, I could be totally wrong.
