Morning Chaps,
I have recently built a system around the following specs
Core2Duo E6400
Gigabyte DS4 (Bios F6)
Geil 1Gig DDR2 800Mhz
Seagate 160Gig HD

The setup has been working great for a week both cores were showing in task manager, Device manager was showing the correct cpu. Last night, I reformatted the HD and installed a fresh copy of XP Pro edition and SP2. Now Windows does not recognise the 2nd core nor is the CPU listed in the device manager. All drivers are installed.

CPU-Z also reports only one core. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

woa...that's weird
you tried re-installing again?
have you played around in your bios lately or something?

Did you install the multiprocessor kernel when you reinstalled XP?

I flashed the bios about a week ago and it worked fine after then, not overclocked it yet so thats not the reason ither.
How do you go about installing the multiproccessor kernal then? When installing XP I uses the F6 method to install the SATA drivers. I then install SP2 and then the drivers for the mobo

If you look under Computer in Device Manager, what does it say? Does it say ACPI PC or Standard PC? If so, you should be able to change that to multiprocessor PC or something similar...

Device Manager shows "Standard PC". However it wont allow me to change the drivers for this.
I think a format and install is called for

no xp should already install the correct HAL drivers upon install, unless hardware changes were made which made the HAL downgrade itself or something

i can't really find anything relevant on ms' website about this

Reply to fattony

There should be a BIOS option to enable ACPI. If not, there should be an option to enable Hyper-Threading (Some Intel Mobos use this option for ACPI - Even though dualcores don't have HT.)

Once it's enabled in the BIOS, you might be able to change the driver to ACPI PC in Device Manager. If not, you'll have to re-install.

Remember, if ACPI is not enabled in the BIOS - Windows won't be able to detect it or utilize it.

Problem Solved. Done a format of the C: drive last night and a fresh install of windows. Installed SP2. Device Manager is now showing it as a MultiProccessorComputer and under the Processor Tab the two cores are showing.

Dont know what went wrong with the last install, but at least its working now.

Thanks for your everybody.
