Agreed, Stalker looks very interesting to me, both in terms of the
gameplay style (especially the large outdoor areas) and the
atmosphere. Atmosphere is one of the main factors as to how much I
enjoy a game, and Stalker looks brilliant in that department.
Except for those invisible "anomalies", that mean the character has to
keep throwing nuts and bolts in the air. Buy a geiger counter, man!

The main problem is with mods for me is finding somewhere to play them
with other people. I only recently got into OFP, and can only find a
couple of Australian servers, and only one of those ever has more than
a few people on it, and even that sits empty most of the time.

Thankfully it wasn't a disappointment for me, since I never intended
to buy it or play it
I've always figured that Doom 3 might provide
a nice-looking engine for some games I might like in the future, much
the same situation for me as for Quake 2 and 3.
I'm sort of undecided about what I've seen for HL2. Some of the
physics effects look pretty neat, and it seems to look great visually,
but I never really got into the first one. Looking at the videos of
HL2, some of it seems interesting, a lot of it doesn't. Far too many
"bosses" that require a dozen BFG or rocket launcher hits, and far too
many stupid little crawling monsters.
There also seems to be a lot that caters to the hardcore fanboys -
e.g. the G-Man from the first HL. Seeing some of the trade show
videos, the reactions of the audience to him and some of the other
features made me gag.
I guess I'll have to sit in my room playing OFP and GR against the PC
