man i'm reading a lot of posts about how everyone has installed an o/s but can't get to the recovery console cuz their cd rom is busted or something or cds aren't booting off properly
prepare for this kinda stuff and don't rely on your cdrom to hit the recovery console, install the recovery console as a boot option for windows, it takes like 5mins and saves a lot of time when sh!t hits the fan
short instructions: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/vinson1.mspx
more details about the RC: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
you can also reduce the system boot menu option timer from the defautl 30 seconds to 2 seconds or something so your boot time doesn't slow down
