IE only sites?

Forum Linux/Free BSD : General Discussion IE only sites?

I am planning to switch to linux on one machines for "mom use", and here is the problem:

my mom has the need to go to an IE-only site for work purposes (the ones who set these things up are complete idiots, needless to say), now is there a way I can do this without some sort of emulator (because of HW requirement?)

the machine is like:
Athlon 1GHz
1GB RAM
AIW Radeon 9200
80GB HDD

yeah, i've had this problem too, a few sites i've gone to just *won't even let firefox get in*. (i've got no problem with people saying "optimized for IE", but refusing access is just rude).

However, if you're using KDE, Konqueror can be set to change its browser identification to trick the website into thinking you're using explorer. this works with *some*, but *unfortunately not all*, sites like that. the only way to tell is to try (or, if you don't want to install linux just to try, post the website address here and one of us here will try to get in).

but yeah, your hardware is too old for VT, and i'm not sure if WINE can run such wintegrated programs like IE, so dualbooting is your last option (1gb should be enough just for webbrowsing on win2k, 2gb for xp, so you won't lose too much space)...

the other option is to *politely* ask the webmaster *why* IE is *needed* for his/her website, and if they could *please* let other browsers use it.

Opera can sometimes make a better stab at IE sites.. Worth a try.

There is an IE for linux - IEs4Linux ( http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page ). I have never tried it though so I don't know if it works well.

The Firefox User Agent Switcher https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/59/ might do the trick.

Ahh.. now this might be easier to fix than you thought. Try having a read through this:

Optimal Use of Fonts

And this:

http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/

I did the same operation on Ubuntu using Automatix to install the core fonts and the difference was night and day..

EDIT -- Good suggestion on the Linux IE but it just feels DIRTY to think that way

AudioVoodoo excellent advice! You're right on!

The fonts should help make everything look nicer.

Also in Firefox:

CTRL + "+" increases font size

CTRL + "-" decreases font size

My personal favorite for font resizing in Firefox (works on all versions I've tried, no matter the OS) is ctrl+mouse scroll. Or, if you have Beryl/Compiz installed, Super(Windows Key)+mouse scroll ;)

Glad I could help :) Part of my new years resolution is to spend more time out of the other and actually doing some more technical debates... Maybe some of your politics are starting to have a positive influence on me

Oh.. and just to add confusion to the fire and because I'm simply blown away by it, try having a look at Swiftfox http://getswiftfox.com/ Full optermised builds of Firefox just for Linux. It has almost halved the page rendering time on my Athlon XP and feels lovely to use.

Debian means I can't use it on Fedora 6?

I am not that good at installing new software!
I could do it easily through the "add remove" tool built in the FD6 (and wow !! they have a bloody long list of cool stuff)...

Debian uses .deb or .dpkg files and apt-get

FC6 uses yum and RPM

You might want to check out:

http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/UsingLivna

Then you can yum cool software like mplayer, VLC, certain libraries, etc

I guess you would have to use the installer script then.. Unless you can find an RPM.. :( One thing to say for the rise in Ubuntu use is that there are more .deb packages out there now than before.

I wouldn't normally bother (I found FireFox to be quick enough) but having tried this I'm just sold... Not worth worrying about though if its going to cause problems.

You do not need the .deb or whatever they distribute a tar file and an installer:

... or get the Firefox sources, configure with the appropriate flags, and build it yerself :)

J/k of course, just get the right package, it's just as good (essentially) and much quicker to install (altho I will say with the dual 285's and the "-j5" option it was pretty reasonable build-time-wise on my system).

Would that not make you Greedy_Byzantine?

Sorry if I overwhelmed you with that one. I'm still very much learning the ropes here too. I just seem a bit more prepared to trash my rig than most. I'm a great one for learning by destruction
