It doesn't do that, you'll need a third party program. Names of two have
been given in the recent past, check the newsgroup archives for the names (I
can't remember them as I have no interest in them) if no one posts them.

I use SynBak. It ertainly backs the cards up well enough, but I've never had
to try restoring them...

You want to backup the contents of your storage card through the nefariously
slow Active Sync Connection too your PC? Not a great solution in the best
of days, and definitely not something that AS supports natively.

Instead I would suggest using a card reader on the PC. Otherwise it ...
will ... be... very ... slow..., especially if your dataset is very large at
all.

If your data is smaller (or you want to sync only specific directories,
etc.) then I would suggest looking at MightySync ($ but cheap at handango)
or MobSync (free through pocketpcfreeware.com). I use the latter with Tombo
and a few things via SD Card, works great.

fwiw, the easiest way to backup your storage card is to use a card
reader ($10-$20) and either run a pc backup program or simply drag the
contents to an empty backup folder on your hard drive.

Anyone know of a program that will back up a device TO and restore FROM a
storage card.

Sort of like one can do with Norton Ghost and two HardDrives in a desktop.

I've been able to use the built in backup feature within setting menu
to back my PPC to the storeage card and restore later. It uses PPC
2002 and I would think they are also available on newer OSes as well.

Yeah. Maybe a card reader is better choice!

Sounds like you got something bundled that I don't have. I have an i700,
what device do you have?

I'm assuming by "setting menu" you mean on the PPC.

Pardon the interruption, on a rx3115 it is called Ipaq Backup, but is
actually Sprite Backup. Works quite well with a sd card.

Now, on with the thread...

Yes, Maestro 1032; PPC 2002 OS (like Toshiba E570 but with half the
internal memory) Under Program there is a program called Backup that
I can use to either backup or restore the internal memory (only the
part actually used to store files) to a choice of either SD or CF
slot.

I guess the program is available to certain models depending who made
them, not a standard of PPC 2002 OS after all.

The built in backup program will do that. Just point it to the storage
card.

Thanks for the suggestion.

What model do you have? I think we determined that some have a backup
program included, but it's not a built in part of the OS. My i700 doesn't
seem to have one.

I'd like to emphasize the importance of backing up the storage card to your
PC or other storage device. My SD card died last week, wouldn't be
recognized in either the PPC or my card reader. Sandisk customer service
was very quick and courteous, and has already shipped me a new card under
warrantee, but of course there's no warrantee for your data.

Think you may be missing the point of the suggestions.

Card readers are around $10, and once the card is in the desktop's card
reader, you approach backing it up the same way that you would approach
backing up any hard drive on the desktop.

Normally, most people simply back the card contents to a folder on the
desktop's hard drive.

If you have already run a "backup to memory card" on your pocketpc,
backing up the card then automatically backs up your entire device to
your desktop.

I've got one of these:

I wrote a dotnet net app that does this actually. I pull my gig sd card, put
it in the reader and click a button. I'm not having any problems backing up
my card data.

This is what I'm confused on. Where do you see this? I can't find it.
Everyone talks about it, like they have it, but I seem to be the only one
that doesn't.

That is logical. I follow you here.

Ah, that's the problem!

Use your main menu:

Start -> Programs -> SD Backup

That should be installed on your PPC by default.

No! That's the problem. There is no "default" backup program on the PPC.
Activesync has a backup facility but the PPC does NOT include one. Some
manufacturers have decided to include a backup routine on their machines,
but only on certain models.

Some HP machines have a utility called "HP Backup" which is a re-badged
Sprite Backup. If you have that, then you can backup to/from the card. If
your machine didn't come with a backup program, you will need to buy one. I
recommend Sprite.

ok. I think I got it now. You are correct, that was the problem. Everyone
kept telling me, "just do this" and there is nothing there.

I'm going to get it soon. Thanks for the feedback.

To sort this out a bit, almost all ppc's ship with some type of backup
utility, different software for different ppc's.

Some come instaled in rom and have different names... _if_ so, browsing
the start/programs and start/system folders will expose something that
is recognizable as a backup util.

If no joy there, check the CD that shipped with the device, both by
looking at the setup software (not activesync) and if not there, browse
the cd's folders.

If not there, time to hit google and search for POCKETPC BACKUP DOWNLOAD.

I use sprite (not free,) but there are several others around as well.
