Hi

I am purchasing a Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB next week. I had a look on the web as to what the power requirements are for this card and most web sites mentioned that one requires a minimum power supply of 400W with 26A output. I currently have a 400W PSU, but with 20A output on the 12V rail. I had a look a other power supplies (from 500W up to 1000W) like Antec, Vantec, Enermax, Thermaltake etc. and they all range between 18A and 20A on the 12V rail. Isn't there a possibility that the "26A" rating is a rating combined from all the other rails put together. Because I couldn't find a power supply with a 26A rating on the 12V rail alone. All that I can think is that all the rails' outputs measured together can give one 26A. Could someone please shed some light on the situation please. The spec listed on my PSU:

AC Input:
230V 50Hz (5A).

DC Output:
+3.3V : 28A
+5V : 40A
+12V : 20A
-5V : 0.5A
-12 : 0.8A
+5Vsb : 2A Peak : 2.5A

+3.3V & +5V : 225W
Total Power Max : 400W

Could someone work this out for me and let me know if this PSU will work?

Well, that was a great NON-answer fly...

From what I can see it's the combined 12v connectors that most of the SLI ready graphics cards of today come with.

So this video card ;

PNY GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP requires a minimum 400W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 26A)

would be satified with this power supply (plus some!) ;

HIPER HPU-4K580-MS ATX12V v2.2

580W+3.3V@30A,+5V@36A,+12V1@20A,+12V2@18A,-12V@0.8A, +5VSB@2.5A = at least 38A

Anyone, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you for the info.

I have read through most of it but I'm still kind of scratching my head.
I am interested in building a new system the uses:

2 Intel Xeon E5320 Clovertown quad-core 1.86GHz Socket 771 CPUs

SUPERMICRO MBD-X7DAL-E-O Dual Socket 771 Intel 5000X ATX Server Motherboard

1 top end 8800GTwhatever Graphics Card

From what I can see, I take it that this PSU would fit the bill...

ENERMAX Galaxy EGX1000EWL ATX12V/ EPS12V/ BTX 1000W Power Supply

It should be, 900W and 75A are dedicated to the 12v rails alone.

Thanks for helping the helpless...

What are you going to use this rig for? This rig looks alotta overkill to me, unless youre working for hollywood and making movies....

Ummm...to serve as a heater for my cold tootsies on a freezing morning?

Ummm...my wife left me and I don't feel so alone with it running under the covers all night?

Ummm...I don't have a frying pan?

Ummm...I got board watching 100 dollar bills burn so I thought I'd buy stuff I don't need?

Ummm...I'm into animation and post processing (plus I consume huge amounts of clock cycles just being a wise guy), all of which are very time consuming unless one has a number of very high end systems composing a render farm...
