Hey all, i've been holding out on buying a core 2 duo. I've read that barcilona (my spelling suxors) is supposed to be released on the 23rd.

i notice the cheapest (e4300) at newegg is $140.00 which is great. When barcilona comes out will it drive prices down even more ?

a guesstimation of price ? i was hearing $100.00, which would be amazing. Right now i'm working off a x2 4200 which after EVERY overclock was unstable (blame it on the crappy gigabyte board)

I'm hoping to get a core2 duo dirt cheap and make my x2 look like crappy in comparison

Barcelona will only be (allegedly) demoed in a desert on Apr. 23. The launch date is still months away, especially for Agena which is the desktop version (Barcy is a server.)

As in everything else it all depends on how long you want to wait to buy your CPU. I have very little doubt that by autumn of this year, E4300s will likely be in the two digit range. Is it worth hanging out for another six months to save $40? That's your call. The E4300 is a helluva value at $140 as it is.

No. E4300 will be EOLed with E4400 replacing E4300 and E4500 replacing E4400.

it'll become cheaper in fall.

If you're looking for a cheap proc/mobo I would be seriously considering AMD right now, you can find something like the X2 4800+ for cheaper than the E4300 and it outperforms it. Unless you are going to be overclocking... then the 4300 dominates

Fairtheewell, E4300, we barely knew ye!

Now can we have a nice Irish wake with lots of beer?

There are quite a few CPUs on both Intel and AMD's side right now that are significantly cheaper than they should be, all other things being equal. The price war is definitely working for the consumer. This is what is typically called a Buyer's Market! Take advantage of it while the Duopoly lasts! :D

i was thinking about that, 6 months probably isn't worth a $40.00 price drop, but i have this bad feeling i'm going to get a core 2, then amd will release a whole new amazing achitecture that will blow core2 duo away, and be just as cheap.

As far as getting a amd processor, i was thinking about it, but 1 i'm not sure how the price / performance is, and how much of a greater impact it will be compared to the dual core x2 i already have.

I read on these forums somewhere about $266 quad cores ? wouldn't this make core2 duo's super cheap

the x2 4200 at stock speed, i can't overclock due to some hardware failure, although i havn't figured out where exactly, maybe a bent pin from re-sitting the proc (heh)

honestly I don't think that you will see a huge difference between the X2 4200+ and the E4300, are you thinking of getting an entirely new computer in order to go to intel? Because I think that getting like an X2 6000+ for $240 would be a much better route than a whole new computer, or even mobo+E4300.

6000+ for $240 will seriously outperform an E4300+mobo which will be about $240 or more also.

But yeah, if you're looking for an upgrade I would go with the X2 6000+

well it sucks because i don't have the am2 motherboard, i have the old 939 motherboard, so i can't upgrade to the 6000 even if i wanted to, unless i buy a new motherboard, so i guess i'm stuck either way

honestly I think that an x2 4200+ is still a great processor right now. I would wait for a new generation of CPUs or until the high end core 2 duos become cheaper. What exactly do you do with your computer?

Intel's price cuts are scheduled for April 22nd. The price of the E4300 should be in the $113 range.

Yeah, one day before the Tunisian AMD demo. Strange about that coincidence, huh?

Regardless of what any rabid rabbit fanbois might tell you, AMD really has only one arch coming up in the foreseeable future, and that is the K10. Don't worry about Singapore, etc. as we and/or AMD may likely not be around long enough. :D

$266 quads should be a reality by autumn, but it really all depends just how far to the wall AMD and Intel want to take this crazy price war of theirs. Pricing is only ever real when it's on the street. Everything else is a delusion. We'll just have to wait and see! All I know is that I've got $500 burning a hole in my wallet just itchin for two quads!!!

I wonder why in a desert. Maybe it's running very hot and it might explode

Hector Ruiz, Henri Richard and Phil Hester are driving to the Tunisian demo when their car breaks down in the middle of the desert. Phil grabs some water, Henri grabs some food, and Hector grabs the car door. They begin walking, when Phil turns to Henri and says,"Why did you bring the food?" Henri replies, "Well in case I get hungry, I can eat it. Why did you bring water?" Phil replies, "Well in case I get thirsty, I can drink it." Then they both turn to Hector and say, "Why did you bring the car door?" Hector replies, "Well in case I get hot, I can roll down the window."

I use my computer for gaming, i have tons of nice games, F.E.A.R, Oblivion, BF2, and so many more.

Right now i have

X2 4200 (90mm)
2Gigs Generic Ram
7800GTX 256Megs (EX version 430mhz clock)
Soundblaster Audigy
Thermaltake case
DVDRW

I play most games at 1280X1024 and a few at 1024X768 on my 17 inch monitor. I could probably Last a while on what i have, but with core2 duo and the Quad core, i was feeling like my X2 was becomming outdated and pretty slow.

Also, though i can't explain it, i ALWAYS have this crazy urge to upgrade my computer. So far i've been good and havn't taken out a loan to build a whole new one, but it eats away at me.

I'm trying to find the nice, cheap upgrade path :D
(that blows away my X2)

honestly if you are gaming that $250 is much, MUCH better spent on a new video card. Grab a 8800GTS 320MB.

8800GTS + X2 4200

will run games a LOT better than

7800GTX + X2 6000

I guarantee it, you will notice a huge difference in gaming going from the 7800 to the 8800, but only a marginal difference going from the 4200 to the 6000

Example:

Fear
X2 4200: 51fps
X2 6000: 62fps

Oblivion 1280x1024
7800GTX: 10
8800GTS: 28

Benches taken from THG but the 8800 is a 640MB...
But in the example the difference between
processors = 22%
Video cards= 180%

This is just an example, and I don't think that the videocard upgrade would actually be 9 times better, but you get the picture of what i'm trying to say
