Having problems getting 2 PCs to communicate. Both are running WinXP Pro. One is wired, the other wireless, both communicating with the same router. File sharing is enabled on the "Server" PC and not enabled on the client.

Steps to reproduce:
Turn on server and login.
Turn on client and login.
Attempt to ping server from client (Can't do it).
Release/Renew IP address on server.
Attempt to ping server from client (Works this time).

What is going on and how do I fix it??? Why do I have to release/renew the server IP address?

Thanks.

dhcp client and dns client services are both set to automatic on the xp station?

also double check your dhcp lease options on the router or reset them to see if it makes a difference, some kinda delay i think, make sure you're not using IP v6, and that client for microsoft windows networks and file/printer sharing are both installed, you shouldn't need any other protocols for ping to work tho

Can you see both PCs in My Network?

I'd enable File/Print sharing on both machines. Make sure that the the Work Group name is the same on both PCs. Shutdown your firewall and check the security settings of the router.

Yes, DHCP and DNS are set to auto.
I had set the router DHCP lease time to 999999 minutes. I checked to see what the default setting was. Turns out it was 180 minutes, so I changed the setting to that value. This seems to have solved the problem.

To answer the other post: Even though the computers could not ping, you could still see the server from the client under Entire Network-->MS Windows Network-->Mshome. You could not access the server's shared resource list or any files.
