I am looking to purchase a 50" TV (probably an LCD model). I have been
looking at the Sony KF50WE610 and the Hitachi 50V500. While at the
store tyring to make my decision yesterday the salesman showed me a
Sony KDFWE655. He said this was a new model that is replacing the
KF50WE610. Does anyone know if that is correct.
Also, he showed me a Hitachi 50v715 which he said is replacing the
50v500.

It sure gets confusing keeping track of all the different models ;)

Shown right at Sony Style

I have the UltraVision line of the Hitachi and IMHO it is a better
monitor for the money.

Yes, the 655 is the new model that replaces the 610. I suggest that you do
not buy a 610. You will just be buying one of the last of the old models,
with a manufacturing date as early as a year ago. Sony had a lot of trouble
with lamps and/or ballasts and/or lamp circuits in those models --
supposedly fixed by the middle of 2004, but why not just go for the newer
model which, hopefully, has eliminated the problem?

Suggest you look at the Sony KDF-55XS955 or KDF-60XS955. New "videophile"
models about $400 more than the 655's. We have a 60XS955, about 3 weeks old
now, and love it. Got an excellent deal on it at Sears -- about a grand
under MSRP, by the time all was said and done. We are using it with
CableCard, btw, which provides slightly improved HD and greatly improved SD
over using a digital box.

Their website list this model at $4399. You actually got a grand off from
that price? Wow!! Did you have to bargain the price down? Just curious
how you got such a good deal. I'd go for this set myself at this price.
That's about $300 less than I gave for my Hitachi 60V715.

I got a verbal quote from a local appliance / electronics store here in
Austin of $3699. But the guy there could not get a delivery date from Sony.
After a couple of weeks, I ordered one from Sears, who told me they could
deliver it in a week. They matched the $3699 price + half the difference
between that and their price -- which was below MSRP -- bringing the Sears
price to $3650. (The Sears salesman asked me for an ad or something in
writing from the appliance store but I didn't have that so they just took my
word for the $3699 quote.)

Then, on delivery day, they didn't have the TV in, so they re-scheduled for
4 days later and gave me another 10% off the price of the TV + tax on that.
Final price = $3250. Paid $45 for delivery and $400 for a 3-year Sears
in-home warranty.

Thanks for the information. It looks like I didn't have the model
number quite correct when I did my search. I took a look at the Sony
models you suggested. The KDF-55XS955 looks great but I have a
constraint on the width. I need to be under 60", perferably around
57-58" max. While on the SonyStyle website I noticed a KDF-55WF655
which would give me the perfect width. I made a call to my local
dealer and they didn't have the TV in stock but he could get it and
the price would be $2950. One thing I like about the KDF-55WF655 over
the
KDF-WE655 is the black color surounding the picture. Since I have not
the seen the unit other than on the website I'm wondering if anyone
has an opinion on the KDF-55XS955?
