Does anyone know what the correlation is between a DLP color wheel rpm
vs. the amount of segments in the wheel vs. picture quality? According
to SamsungUSA, their fourth generation rear DLP televisions (74W
series) spins at 9,000rpm while their third generation (63W series)
spins at 10,800rpm. Furthermore, the fourth generation has 6 segments
to the color wheel while the third generation has 7 segments.
Basically, the newer generation has fewer color segments and spins
slower. Hmmmm?

Lastly, how long are the wheels supposed to last? I saw a Toshiba DLP
set which had a scrambled screen on occasion. When I walked up to the
set, I heard a piercing noise coming from its color wheel. If
anything, I think I'll get the Samsung DLP or a higher end
rear-projection LCD like the Hitachi Ultravision. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

Will.

They probably lowered the rotational speed to lessen the customer complaints
of whistling or buzzing noises being generated. Have replaced quite a number
of them already because of that specific complaint. Personally I would steer
clear of Samsung and go for the Hitachi. Their 50V500+ series are quite nice
items.
