i just installed the new beta drivers 158.19 from nvidias website, and although they say there is 3d performance increase i have not seen any.
even stranger with the new drivers in ghost recon advanced warfighter when me and the other ghosts are shooting at the same time, i can't hear my gun fire, and when i die i can't hear the audio from the old guy that says"caption mitchel is down, abort mission". But with the old drivers it works fine.
I would personally stay away from BETA drivers, until there offical always full of bugs and may cause some crashing just stick with 100.51 or 97.94(Win XP)
Seeing as you have an 8800GTS, whom myself have a 8800GTX, there really isnt need for those driver which are really just for the 8600GTS Etc.
I'll Probably go back to the 97.94 drivers i was using before, i'm just gonna test them in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to see if there is a performance increase in that game, seeing as it wasn't running all that great before.
The new drivers caused the control panel to crash often, and then Oblivion crashed as well; I didn't notice any performance improvements, but then again I didn't get to play long enough before problems occurred.
the new drivers are the biggest night and day difference ive ever seen in just a driver update. 3dmark and all games performance increased. no cons for me at all updating.
all i need now is a fix for my blurry text. i guess its a clear type issue some people are having with 8800's

I had blurry text too with my 8800GTS and an Acer 22" LCD. The X1950XT was clear as can be, the 8800GTS was blurry over either DVI out. I was going to RMA the 8800GTS or just trade up for a better one. Supposedly using the adaptor and analog VGA cable works fine, but I didn't test that.
Anyway, this fix totally worked for me. Give it a try. Follow the blue ribbon post from DStaffieri. It totally cleared up my text...night and day difference.

You're welcome. Did you try it yet? I tell ya, I could not have kept the card without this fix. 8O
Yeah it works perfectly. I found something similar to that before but couldnt get it to work. Not as detailed instructions. All it said was change from 1440x900 to something close like 1440x899?????

i just reinstalled the drivers but this time using driver cleaner to clean out the old ones, and everything seems to be fine. ghost recon is back to normal and i did notice an increase in performance for stalker.
Idle temperatures seem higher today. Only change from yesterday has been the driver update to 158.19. System, CPU and ambient temps are the same as yesterday. I just blew out the card out. Load temps seem the same.
