I was hoping somehow knew of a free virus scanner than can run from a thumbdrive and scan a harddisk that doesn't want to completely boot.

I'm trying to see if this machine has a worm because of its reboot patterns or if its hardware ( which i'm confident i've eliminated )

If the above doesn't work.. any help on trying to figure out if this thing has a virus or not.. before i have to do the necessary evil and end formating

Hi,

Does the PC not even boot up in Safe Mode ?

Otherwise I would create a BartPE CD and boot off that.
you will need the XP isnatllation CD for this (or at least the i386 directory from the CD)

Then add the AVG antivirus free and Adaware spyware free plugins.
