im thinking about modding my old case and putting fans in a weird way. i want to cut out the side and make it a metal mesh. i want to have three fans: one in the front, one on top, and one in the rear, all fans intake. the air would exit the side. would it even be worth it to even have fans with the mesh?

Yes, it would be worth it. Even though there will be a mesh, the air needs to be moved. Convection will take place, but by the time convection starts occurring it will be very hot inside the case. Use Scythe S-Flex fans, they are quiet and move a good amount of air. I would recommend that you have the top fan exhaust, hot air can build up at the top of a case and each intake is a point for dust to get into your system. Look into filters for the intake fans.

Correct. Pushing too much air into the case, and not enough going out is going to result in a lot of hot air just sitting inside the case.
