Many posts on this and other forums recommend reinstalling the OS instead of using the restore console.

Why :?:

You could have at least provided some links to some of the posts. What do you mean by "restore console"?

You can either reinstal or select "R" restore/repair when you boot from the OS CD.

I'am not going to look back through posts, you'll have to believe me :)

the option R doesn't actually repair anything, you're given a command shell to do whatever you know from the prompt to try and recover the system or to get into a bootable state, it's not automated and it's an advanced section for experts

the re-install/repair option (not recovery console) will just repair the system files for you, which is fine for novice users i guess...
