Out of this article I was wondering if by having a radeon with avivo is enough to read and decrypt HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movie or we still need to have the drive?

Thanks

You still need to have a Blue-Ray or HD-DVD drive installed on your system. While AVIVO (never personally tested) can decode it, you need the drive to read the disc in the first place.

Hope that helps.

Well if he has a 'back-up' on his HDD he should be able to read it without the drive, but otherwise I don't see how you would get the content into the playback stream.
