I know this is possible but I'm hoping someone can tell me how to do it. Occasionally we require the XP disk for installing things like Language Packs and other strange files or even just changing some of the accessories.
How do I download the XP Pro disk onto the system so that I don't need to keep digging out the original disk. Does it have to be on the Boot drive?
I hope it isn't as easy as just copy it ... but you never know. Admittedly I haven't tried but by the time I need it either 1 I dig it out or 2 I can't find it. Thanks in advance.
does it matter what hard drive i put it on? There is an i386 folder in the windows. Do I just replace it or does it need to be added somewhere else on the C drive or will any drive do?
You want to put it at the top level of a drive. Also change the registry entry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath to match the location of the I386 folder. Don't touch the I386 folder in the Windows folder.
I rarely play with the registry. What is the registry file name and what do I use to edit it. can I use notpad or do I have to use regedit? Been a very long time since I used regedit if so I would love to get a list of commands.
also, you might find it easier to have a couple of servers share out the i386 folder with only read/execute permissions, and maybe map that on the user machines or just give the UNC path to it, create a shortcut or something to the folder share maybe...this way it's cerntralized and you don't have to have the i386 on every workstation
