NTFS has been around a lot longer than XP. When WindowsNT 3.51 was released, so was NTFS... and this is pre-Win95. Vista was supposed to introduce a new file system known as WinFS, but much like Vista, it has been delayed. I think MS is still considering it as an update for Vista somewhere down the road, but I'm not sure.

yeah it was codenamed xfat i think...but it got scrapped, sounded like a grand idea to me, considering how ext2 is still better than ntfs, and it's been out for a pretty damn long time...still, ext3 and xfs are the best file systems in my opinion
