Hey guys, I'm looking for a new cable modem and I have no clue where to start on my research. What are the things I should consider before I buy a new modem? If I do buy a new modem will it actually increase the speed of my internet? Right now I get... download and upload speeds. So like I said will it actually make my internet faster?
It won't increase your speed over what you pay for, but it might help you achieve that speed.
However, the most common problem with cable broadband speed is that the cable itself is a party line and they don't really have the bandwidth to provide all the bandwidth they sell at the same time. So, when a lot of your neighbors are online, your bandwidth slows down. Even the best modem can't give you what isn't there.

So their is no point in buying a new modem then correct? All I want to do is change my MAC address...I was told I would need a new modem. That true?
Generally a modem has a private range IP address and has a bridge in place towards your CPE (router, PC or other equipment).
Changing the modem will change your modem MAC, but this has no real effect on the speed or any other issues as that IP address and MAC address is not seen outside your ISP's network.
The MAC address you generally want to change is the MAC for the CPE, which means that you can change it in software if the CPE allows it. Otherwise you'd need to buy a new CPE (usually a router or NIC). This will change your public IP unless your ISP has bound the IP address to your account.
