my current setup:
Asus A8N-SLI
Athlon 3500+ (oc@2,4ghz)
2gb RAM
ATI Radeon800XL 256MB

i want to buy a geforce 8800gts 320mb (320mb should be enough, my screen only supports 1280x1024).
my question: does the 8800gts make any sense in my system? the powersupply is pretty much the only part i am sure doesn't need replacing (i replaced that 2 months ago when the old one died).
how much of a bottleneck would my cpu be? at its current speed it is on par with an athlon 3800+, but of course far from modern dualcores.
the cpu could possibly be overclocked higher, but not with my current ram. buying a new cpu/ram is not really an option, those parts are far too expensive for the amount of improvement i would see.

It should be fine - you'll lose a few frames per second but nothing too significant unless you're playing the latest multi-threaded-optimised games.

IMO the 8800 GTS 320 was made for this sort of resolution.

thanks for the quick reply.
i am also planning a mainboard/cpu/ram upgrade in a few months possibly, so i am just buying the graphics card a little early (and maybe my old system is good enough for a few months longer with the new card).

should be fine, you will get great frames, and untill the next gen of games your CPU wont have a big impact, think of this like the folks running there 7800GS on an XP3200 for an idea of preformace
