I still don't understand this concept in setting up a dish. There are various
numbers..02,03 and etc up to 32. How do I know which one affects my dish. It
was installed by a professional installer over a year ago. Some of these
readings are low and some go as high as 98. So other than having to move the
dish to accomadate the highest reading, what purpose does it serve? Obviously
one can not do this setting by oneself. How do I find out which number is mine
related to, so if I see that its weakening, I could readjust with some help.

Each transponder carries a specific group of channels. Some very high
numbers may be for your local spot beams and very low numbers are for
somebody elses local channel spot beams. If you tune into a channel, boxes
I'm familiar with at least will default to the transponder for that channel
when going into the installation menu. Such information can help people
troubleshoot the hardware when something goes wrong. For example, if the odd
numbered transponders for Sat 101 on a DirecTV system dip down, there is a
problem with the 13V section of Sat A.

A satellite of this type has multiple transponders. A transponder is
really, for all practical purposes, a transmitter with a fixed amount of
bandwidth. This bandwidth can be split and allocated to multiple
"channels" - Some transponders are "wide beam" - meaning they cover all of
the US, and others are "spot beam" meaning they cover smaller regions (this
is how many local channels are transmitted).

So, your receiver may use multiple transponders on the satellite - that's
why having a consistent signal across transponders is necessary (you may
notice that some transponders show a ZERO signal...it may be inactive).
