hi, i am also going to build a new computer soon. Which will be for general use and play some online games, Warcraft3 and Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars.

I will not be overclock it in the near future yet.

My specification are:
=============
Processor Intel Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 2.13GHz FSB1066MHz 4MB
MotherBoard Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3) Intel P965+ ICH8 chipset
Memory CorsairTwin2X-5400C4 DDR2 667 2GB(2x1GB) 4-4-4-12
Graphics 7600GT or 8500GT or 8600GT
Harddisk Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s 320GB 16MB
(ST3320620AS)
Optical Drive LG H44N 18X DL DVDRW
PSU SilverStone 500W+PFC ATX12V v2.2 (ST50EF) or SilverStone 560W+PFC ATX12V (ST56F)

Question1: What is the difference between E6400 & E6420
other than the 2MB and 4MB cache and how come the price for E6420 is cheaper than E6400. How is the performance comparison?

Question2: Regarding the Motherboard, what is the difference between ICH8 & ICH8R which i saw in gigabyte website Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 and Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P?

Question3: Any ideas which Graphics card to buy?

Any comment or advise is needed. Thanks a lot :D

From what I understand, the E6420 is the same processor, except for the cache difference you mentioned, and it's beiong marketed by Intel at the same price point. Go for the E6420. There's no reason not to.

ICH8R has more bells & whistles, more SATA ports, RAID options, etc. I would just look at the feature set of the particular mobo, and see if it has everything you need.

I'm not a gamer, so I can't help you on the graphics cards.

unless you really want a DX-10 card now, none of the above. Get a 7900 or x19xx, more bang for your buck and plenty of pep left for the games you play

Thanks Kang, alcattle and wilcoxon for the reply. 8) But i got a buget limit so if need to choose which 1 will be better compare 7600GT, 8500GT and 8600GT. And is my PSU able to support DX-10 or 7900 and x19xx card if i plan to upgrade it?

Thanks again :D

I decided to stay on 7600GT for now and upgrade it in the future. So which brand/model of 7600GT will be a good choice and provide good cooling?

For the memory i want to change to Geil PC2-5300 DDR2-667 2GB (1GBx2) CAS 3-4-4-8 Dual Channel Kit (Sku# GX22GB5300SDC) as it was shown in gigabyte memory support list(Rev2.0), the latency timing is also faster and it is also cheaper than CorsairTwin2X-5400C4 DDR2 667 2GB(2x1GB) 4-4-4-12. Geil Dual Channel Kit PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz, CAS 4-4-4-12 (Sku# GX22GB6400UDC) is also not in the list.

Anyone already using Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3)? which memory/ram are you using? Is there any compactible issue or any problem i need to look out for. THanks

I haven't heard of any decent RAM not working in any decent motherboard in a long time.

The only issue I've heard lately is that alot of the RAM wants 2.1 or 2.2V and the standard is 1.8V so there have been issues with not being able to boot the system to get into the bios to up the RAM voltage without first putting some 1.8V RAM in the system.

ok i had choosen Leadtek WinFast PX7900 GS TDH(HDCP Ready) because they support HDCP which the rest did not support. But 1 thing is that this card need a minimum recommended 350W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 20A).

And i plan to get SilverStone 500W+PFC ATX12V v2.2 (ST50EF) but this PSU only support 12V with current rating of 18A/19A which does not meet the requirement of the graphic card. So is it okay if i use this PSU with the Graphics Card?

No idea but I would hope so. The ATX standard specifies 18A per 12V "rail".

Of course, some PSUs don't exactly follow this (Seasonic PSUs (at least some models) appear to have a total amp rating across all 12V rails (which averages to around 18A per) but is not limited as per the standard). I suppose you could just buy a Seasonic (or Corsair as they are made by Seasonic) PSU and not worry about it.

Urgents

well today went to buy all the parts but some of the part are out of stock in my local store @ sg, so this is my new system:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 2.13GHz FSB1066MHz 4MB
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3) Intel P965+ ICH8 chipset
Memory: Corsair Twin2X-5400C4 DDR2 667 2GB(2x1GB) 4-4-4-12
Graphics Card: Leadtek PX8600GT 256MB DDR3
Optical Drive: LG GSA-H44N 18X DVR-RW
PSU: SilverStone Strider 560W (ST56F)

when i finish building the system, i ran memtest+ v1.7 without installing windows XP Pro. It hit 8 error when running for 15mins and i remove 1 stick and run for 30mins and it never hit and error. So i try the other stick which hit error when running for 15mins. So is my RAM spoiled? And i suspect they swap it with a good one, as i know corsair test their memory in pairs. How can i know whether is it the same pairs?

Thanks

By the way i am from singapore and i did not buy it online. I bought it from my local store in singapore. Today went to change it. My six sense was correct that the pair of Corsair RAM i had was swap.

On the 1st ram stick, the sticker there show:

CM2X1024-5400C4 4-4-4-12
XMS5402v5.2 675MHz 1024MB
001193 07060804-0 XMS2-5400

2nd ram stick sticker show:

CM2X1024-5400C4 4-4-4-12
XMS5402v5.2 675MHz 1024MB
000399 07060804-0 XMS2-5400

After i had change it, the sticker show:

1st Stick:

CM2X1024-5400C4 4-4-4-12
XMS5402v5.2 675MHz 1024MB
001195 07060804-0 XMS2-5400

2nd Stick:

CM2X1024-5400C4 4-4-4-12
XMS5402v5.2 675MHz 1024MB
001196 07060804-0 XMS2-5400

And i going to test it tomorrow morning. What is the minimum time i need to run the memtest+ v1.70 that confirm the RAM was stable and in good condition?

I had finish testing my new RAM. I'm using memtest86+ v1.70 to test it for 4hrs and it never encounter any error which is good for me 8)

and this are the setting in my BIOS:

MB Intelligent Tweaker (M.I.T.)

Robust Graphics Booster [Auto]
CPU Clock Ratio [8x ]
CPU Host Clock COntrol [Disable]
X CPU Host Frequency(MHz) 200
PCI Express Frequency(MHz) [Auto]
C.I.A.2 [Disable]
System Memory Multipier(SPD) [Auto]
Memory Frequency(MHz) 667 667
High Speed DRAM DLL Settings [Option1]
*********** System Voltage Optimized ***********
System Voltage Control [Manual]
DDR2 overVoltage Control [Normal]
PCI-E overVoltage Control [Normal]
FSB overVoltage Control [Normal]
(G)MCH overVoltage Control [Normal]
CPU Voltage Control [Normal]
Normal CPU Vcore 1.35000v

How do i set the timing for the ram?

How do i set the timing for the ram?
When you first get into BIOS (the screen with standard setup, advanced setup, etc.) press CTRL-F1. Then go into M.I.T. and the RAM timing settings will be there. Why does Gigabyte hide this? Wish I knew.

Running cpu-z under CPU shows:

Core Speed - 1600.0Mhz
Multiplier - x6.0
Bus Speed - 266.7Mhz
Rated FSB - 1066.7Mhz

under Memory show:

Frequency - 333.3Mhz
FSB:DRAM - 4:5
CAS# Latency - 5.0 clocks
RAS# to CAS# Delay - 5 clocks
RAS# Precharge - 5 clocks
Cycle Time (Tras) - 15 clocks
Command Rate - 2T

under SPD @ Timings Table show:

Frequency - 266Mhz - 333.3Mhz
CAS# Latency - 4.0 - 5.0
RAS# to CAS# - 4 - 5
RAS# Precharge - 4 - 5
Tras - 12 - 15 clocks
Trc - 15 -19

May i know which 1 is actual reflecting my bios setting?

And what is the different between
Tested at JEDEC-standard latency
settings (4-4-4-12) at 1.9V
SPD programmed at JEDEC standard
5-5-5-15 values

Lastly which/what setting can best optimize my system.

Thanks
