The original plan was to build the new work computer, and take that back and forth from there to the Jersey Shore, but since it's more stuff to remember, and easy to forget, I figure that is now not a good idea :).

So, I'm building a fail safe PC that will enable me to not need to upgrade for the next 5 years at least.

So, here's what I've got as a choice in motherboards :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130082

I'm trying to stay away from Asus, because out of the three i've used, one is bound to fail on me sooner or later and their tech support is the worst of them all it seems..

here's my choice in cases. Does the last one really have side lights that move like a KITT Scanner?

My CPu choice is a no brainer

What do you all think?
i'm hoping to eventually add a HDDVD and Blu-Ray down the road when it's cheap to add them. Motherboard will be left on 24/7 so heat is an issue...will be getting a Zalman CSP9500 to cool it all, motherboard must support quad core, core 2 extreme and core 2 duo...

Thanks!

For most people, this is not possible. For those for whom it IS possible (people who only need low-end systems), it is normally much more expensive than upgrading along the way. What do you want to use the computer for?

In this case, HD And SD Video and Audio editing, and 3D work. I don't care about games, so Frame rates and such are not an issue..:)

5 years is a long time in the computer world, so I assume you want one to last that long.
For what you want, you will need a fast CPU, lots of RAM and HD Space, I am thinking 3 drives, one from the os and one for the programs then one for the work in progress. A solid PSU, cool and quiet, and quiet fans. What programs do you use, and are they availible for XP-64? Those can use RAM while XP limits you to ~3gb.

If I'm not mistaken, you're looking for some portability. How about a laptop with an external USB hard drive for storage/ file swapping? Get a cheap lexmark printer and leave it down the shore.

What exit?

If you mean shore exit, 88 :).

While a new laptop is in the future (the old AMD won't cut it no more, and I got that in 2004...)I tend to be a bit forgetfull. So I'd prefer to have a dedicated PC down there should I just forget.

I think the new plan is to bring my Core 2 Duo down there permanently, and get the setup I originally wanted for here.

A Case with easier to reach USB ports, a USB Card reader, a Creative Labs 3.5 audio tray for the front bay, etc...

The Future Proofing is not a 100% no sale requirement, but it would be nice to get it as fail proof as I can for now :).

Oh, question. Even though there won't be many programs to take advantage of the Quad Core for years to come..let alone Core 2 Extreme, is there much of a difference in power between the two that would be noticeable? If not, that would expand the range of MOBO options :).

I grew up 150, got cousins @ 123 and 80. Spent many a summer @ 82. Was @ Point Pleasant almost a year ago, appalled at the price of food now! That was half the appeal....good, CHEAP food. 82 became a police state so we all went south......far south. My sis-in-law has family in Bay Head, too.

What about this for a cheap comp starter? I don't know your layout @ 88, but between wicked weather, and undesirables, you may regret putting a decent comp down there.

In my case, grew up in 161( I think that's Paramus) parents bought the shore house around 88/82(we get off at both :)) in 1980. Have grandparents at 157, and that's about it :). The history of the family, as I found out today, seems to be based in and around the Paterson/Fairlawn/Elmwood Park area :).

Even though we're three blocks from the beach, we've been pretty lucky about weather. The house is newly built, coming up on 6 years, and went through the last nor' easter without a scratch. Flooding isn't an issue either, because it's on the second floor.

I think what I'm going to do is take the 'budget' one at home down there, and put the 'newer' one here. So I don't mind too much about spending....

Also, does anyone have this sound card? I'm thinking of getting it for the Optical in and hook up my DVR directly too it.

Yo...Soprano Country here 8)
I lived smack in the middle of all of that. I also worked over in So. Hackensack, with Teterboro flying directly overhead. Ever been to Satin Dolls? Did lunch there a few times...not bad. Food's alright too
Glad to hear you're not on beach....never had much sympathy for those that build there and wonder why their belongings are in the ocean....or Barnegat Bay. I have to say I DEFINITELY miss the food from back there. No one knows how to make a proper sub out here. Deli's are non-existent. Pizza is "passable" from the guys from back East, otherwise, it's Dominoes

Back on topic:
I imagine you should get some pretty good life out of a higher end dual-core. The C2Ds are damn nasty for overclocking. Going with enough memory and enough storage should go a long way. We're a couple of years into 64 bit processors, and still no decent 64 bit programs, so hard to tell ya which way to go there. Probably 64 bit OS, since it'll take most 32 bit programs.
Rumor has it the Q6600 will drop to $266 in October, so maybe getting a quad-ready board with a cheapo C2D for now is the way to go. That'll put you at least $100 ahead of the game and you have a spare C2D to boot. Vista pretty much sucks....no progs, no driver support, issues all around. I went with a dual-boot setup on main comp...XP and Vista. Vista was one of those coupon deals...I paid $12.13 for another OS. I've got it loaded so I can become familiar with it, but I still don't trust it. If you think you might go dual-boot, leave a blank second partition at least 20 gigs so you can slip Vista in later. It does it automatically when you load the second OS, so it's pretty painless. Just specify the second partition as where you want the second OS.

Hey n00bie? Why would anyone want to spend $329 for a motherboard? Are you really that dum? 8O

cuz he said this...

:p :p :p

Some times you don't mind spending $300 once every coupla years, rather than $100 every year for a newer mobo.

Noob count, not noob head 8)

What about this mobo?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127020

It's got Quad support, 1333 fsb support, and optical in and out!
It's also got uguru and AutoDrive, throttling features which might come in handy for when it's not in use, but powered up.

http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=333

Tempting...especially for the Optical in. I'd much rather have an in, than an Optical Out..dunno why most MOBO's don't include both. But $329 is more than the Core 2 Duo I'm buying, so that is a tad bit pricey :). Still looking to stay in the $100-$200 range.

Also, do they make Case paint or replaceable DVD Drive 'front panel' thingies? I have one case in mind, but I'm thinking of painting it red....especially since this one has a cheap paint job. OR if I get the other one, the entire front panel is a grill...and dust apparently gets through that easilly. I'd need to replace the front drive bay 'take out' panels to cut down on the dust...

Later :)

This board is extremley tempting. EVGA will also be the maker of my video card as well. Hopefully more cards will be leaning toward X16 and X1 slots :).

Also, Anyone know when the Intel price drop is happening? I don't have to buy the CPU until Jun 1st at least...

Okay...maybe I AM a noob-head.....

MY MOBO has opty in/out and it's $140

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127004

Prices on Intels are dropping as we speak....they're settling in to their estimated prices, but they did drop considerably this week.

Ewww  ECS? Did they get any better? I bought one once as one of those mobo combos from Fry's and it died soon after. I've come to the mindset that it's better for me to get a quality mobo and maybe change out the CPU every once in a while. I had a Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI mobo that saw 4-5 different processors and it's still going strong in the comp I built for my bro. I definitely wouldn't go spending more than $200 on a mobo, unless there's one that has the coffee ready for me in the morning

I was looking for a mobo that has his requested optical in option. I knew I saw one once.....CUZ I DID ONE MYSELF!!! Excuse me as I wipe the egg off my face. At least I had the manufacturer right! Who cares that it's less than half the price of the first one I suggested?

Just to make certain I'm seeing the right price...

The E6600 at $235 is a dropped price? I don't think that changed too much.

It WAS $308-315 last week....that's a drop, dude.

Hmm, why do I think it was at $270? Maybe that was the 2.14
