Removable storage drives not showing up in Windows XP

I'm creating this topic on behalf of a friend; basically, his CD drive, his ipod, and every removable storage device is no longer showing up within Windows XP after he recently installed a program called "u3". The drives do not show up in my computer or device manager. He has since removed the program to no avail. I've never had a problem like this so I'm unsure how to diagnose it. Anyone else have any ideas?

Right-click My Computer - Properties - Hardware - Device Manager.

Remove all references to the missing stuff, as well as everything inside of USB Controllers. Reboot.

XP should reinstall everything. If not, post back.

Does the u3 thing still appear in Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs?
