Hi all i bought a OEM Vista Home Premium copy installed it on my home pc and activated all ok BUT cant install it on my dads pc. I assumed you could install it up to 3 pcs?

If not where does vista keep the file which turns off the 30 day activation so i can put it on my dads?

Nope.

You need to buy two copies of Vista to run on two machines.

lets say my hard drive die. Im done ?

You will have to call Microsoft and explain your situation. They may reactivate your key, but they can tell if you have it already on another machine.

Reply to sruane

Yes, I think so. Of course, this is for the OEM version, NOT FOR THE RETAIL.

I dont want to install it on multiple machine, i just want to install on my pc, but i change a lots of pieces, drive, mb.

I'm pretty sure that once you change the mobo, and you have an OEM version, you have to buy a new copy. For you, it's best to go with Retail.

Retail is 5 times right ?

NOT CORRECT. You can change bits of hardware and call Microsoft up if you need to reactivate. I'm really getting pissed by people who have no idea spreading crap on this forum.

People are finding out that it is 3 times. Maybe that will change in the very near future.

Hey I called microsoft tech support and ask them and they told me I can install Vista as many times as I needed to when I change hardware as long as it on only one machine at a time. :)

Maybe we need clarification - define 1 machine at a time? Are they counting a MB changout or CPU changout as the same machine for MS tech support? From our local MS tech support rep. at my corp, a MB or CPU changout is considered a new machine for Vista. This was not the case for XP. I'm thinking if tech support gave you this info, the support for validation is in flux because of the problems they are receiving with it.

I obviously can't speak as to Vista other then to say after the original licensing announcement they reverted to the XP scheme. As far as the XP scheme goes you could reinstall about every 3 1/2 monthes without having to call MS for reactivation. Any more often and you would indeed have to call. I not only activated but I did the voluntary registering which had come in handy because I had lost my CD key I called them and they issued me a new cd key. The only thing they needed was to verify me and to know whether I had an OEM, retail, corporate etc edition. As much as people like to hate them their customer service was awesome. Granted their products are quite a bit too expensive. But what you gonna do, they own your desktop.

Yes it will be considered as new computer, but it is still one computer. As long as it is the ONLY computer that you have Vista installed you should be fine, for the retail version. Unlimited amount of times. For OEM the situation is different: From here

Quote :

"It's important that people understand the OEM EULA when it says that your OEM Vista (XP is the same) can not be transferred to a new computer, and a new (upgraded) motherboard is also considered a new computer," the system builder added. "I've activated hundreds of PCs over the years and have never had an activation rep ask if I am transferring the OEM software to a new PC. The only question that you must answer correctly (no) in order to receive the activation code is: "Is this version of Windows on more than one PC?". Therefore the end user assumes that since they received an activation code they must be legal."

i have a problem in that i bought an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate and for ever reason my computer i installed it on does not work anymore, i was wondering if i could install it on another machine?

Seeing these issues and responses makes me glad I purchased Technet. I can reinstall as often as I like and not have to worry about these issues. If I run out of online activations, I can just go to my technet account and get a new key. Each key allows for 10 activations.....on ONE pc.
