i have this dlp set (very satisfied with it). it has three component
inputs. component 1 is set for 480 for use with dvd players. the other
two apparently are set at 1080.
my daughter just brought me (from new zealand) an interesting dvd
player. from my (US) point of view, the benefits are that it is region
free (so i can import european dvds from other regions - particularly
important for me since the non-region 1 opera offerings are much
greater than those for region 1), can output either ntsc or the
various pal signals (of course i only use the ntsc), and may not
have macrovision enabled (i have yet to test this).
for a very modest price (nz equivalent of us$50), it offers composite,
component, and s-video outputs. (pscan is built in as well.)
but i already have a good region 1 dvd player connecting to the
component 1 input to the hdtv. component 3 is taken up with the output
of the comcast set top box. component 2 is free.
is there any way for me to use the component 2 input to the hdtv in a
480p or 480i mode? some setup condition in the hdtv software which
would permit this conversion? or is there some a/b switch for
component signals which would allow me to switch between the two
players, even if it were somewhat inconvenient. anything better than
having to unplug one player and plug in the other each time wanted to
change which player i would use?
if not, i can still use the s-video and composite outputs, of course.

I've got an HLN model, but I think Samsung did the inputs the same way. I
think the component 2 and 3 inputs can take 480p/720/1080i signals. As long
as you have your DVD player set to do progressive scan (480p) I think it
should work on component 2.
