The following features use Internet protocols, which send to the
appropriate systems computer information, such as your Internet protocol address, the type of
operating system, browser and name and version of the software you are using, and the
language code of the device where you installed the software.
Now, what does "name and version" actually mean? Does it mean names and versions of ALL software that I have? Initially I thought no, but then I saw the following:
Quote :
Content owners use Windows Media digital
rights management technology (WMDRM) to protect their intellectual property, including
copyrights. This software and third party software use WMDRM to play and copy
WMDRM-protected content. If the software fails to protect the content, content owners may
ask Microsoft to revoke the software’s ability to use WMDRM to play or copy protected
content.
So, does it mean that MS has to know the names of the software installed on your system in order to revoke the right of using it???
That's what I was thinking about too.... I've read same kind of Dutch articles explaining this privacy matter. So, if they may just break into my pc and play for police? Why can't hackers do the same without going to jail? Just by installing backdoors on pc's and take a look what software they are using.
Done more study on that. I think the situation is not that bad. In the same license one can find the following"
Quote :
When you download licenses for
protected content, you agree that Microsoft may include a revocation list with the licenses.
Meaning that MS upload the list of the revoked software: names and versions of drivers, players, etc. For example:
- NVIDIA driver v105.32,
- SoundBlaster v.3234
- Window Media Player 10.1 (just for the sake of example )
etc
and then Vista checks your software against this list when DRM is used. No information is actually send to MS if you use or even have a particular player/driver on your computer.
