When I remove my SD from the Dell Axim X5 and put it into a reader on
the desktop do I need to hit "Safetly remove hardware" on the desktop
under windows XP Pro? The card reader connects to desktop thru
the USB port, the Axim has a slot for the SD card.
Is there an equivalant "Safetly remove hardware" function on the Dell
and do I need to worry about it on the dell?

not strictly speaking...
If there is no "file transfer" window up, it should be safe to remove...
do it all the time, but have been caught by other programs such as WMP
that transfer files in background to cards.
In addition, make sure there are no files on the card open by other
apps... normally XP will complain if there are and get you to reinsert
the card.

To be sure the buffers are flushed, you can right-click on the drive-letter
instance and select 'eject'. On my system, I see the card's subfolders
disappear from the explorer once all the pending data is written to the
card. Then you can remove it without fear of XP informing you that there was
some data not written.

I would recommend using the "Safely Remove" function; just removing the
card without doing so can often result in corruption on the card that causes
it to not be able to "see" the files on the card, even though they are
there. It does not necessarily depend on the buffers being flushed;
Windows will periodically access the card to see if anything has changed,
and if you pull the card out while this is happening, corruption will occur.
I have several colleagues who just yank their cards out, and they
frequently have problems. I always use the Safely Remove Hardware to stop
the card, and I have never had any problems. I use both an SD and a CF card
in my Axim x50v.

Hi
When you remove a storage card, the operating system fires and event the
applications that use the SD card can read and deal with to prevent or
recover from errors. you can see this if you remove the SD card when the
pocket pc is turned off, it will automatically turn on. Before you remove
the SD card i would normally make sure that no programs is using it by
closing all programs.

There's an option to disable cashing of data so it takes longer to save
but you can eject whenever the light is not flashing.

As a rule I switch my PDA off before removing any cards.
