I've been thinking about bringing a desktop to college. I already have a netbook that I could use for notes and other basic things. Most colleges suggest buying a laptop that will last the whole 4 years. All their recommended laptops are close to $1500 dollars or more. I think this money could better be spent on a custom desktop. I don't feel it necessary to buy an expensive laptop that will quickly become obsolete and have crappy battery life. Gaming is also one of my hobbies. All the schools i've applied to are primarily small, catholic schools (not party schools).

Opinions? Good/bad idea?

I have a desktop at college, and so do my three roommates, it works out for us all fine if you don't mind moving your tower around. I have the tower and a netbook too

If you've got a netbook you're fine. I spent three years in college with a netbook (well, a laptop at first, but I got a netbook after they went viral) and a gaming desktop and used my netbook far more than my desktop for schoolwork. The desktop is nice to come home to, but it's not needed if that's what you're asking. Just be prepared to lug it to your next dorm room every year.

Laptop for work, desktop for gaming, works like a charm! Plus, spending $1500 on a desktop would allow you to make a really nice one, so all the better. XD

You take a desktop into the classroom? Must take some time setting up and carrying around school and so on, especially if it's a full sized tower.
