Other reports say it was 4.5%.

That was for global microprocessor MS. This is for x86 only. A 6% shift in one quarter is nearly unbelievable but it explains a lot.

but i thought amd said they lost money because of lower asp's. now your posting it was because of lost market share and asp's?

AMD will never directly admit to losing market share. It looks better if you blame it on price wars. Admitting to losing market share tanks your stock price.

Either way, it ain't good news for AMD. And this shouldn't be a big surprise to anyone, least of all us.

No, they said the opposite in their conference call.

The only comment I would make to give you the best color would be ASPs were the small piece of the equation in the sequential movement quarter to quarter. It was mostly units. ASP were a piece of the equation but the driver was the unit drop quarter on quarter. That was in all segments, whether it is desktop, mobile, server.

In AMD's conference call, the direct question was asked about if the price war had an impact on their loss. AMD came back and said that the decrease in volume was much more damaging than the ASP decline.

That means that even AMD themselves mention that their crappy product mix (and resulting MSS loss) is more to blame for their cash loss than the price war. These MSS numbers confirm that.

qc only puts out info that is available.

I think AMD should borrow my .45 and load a 4/10 shotgun shell in it and aim it at their foot. Either that or get a friggen move on.

They already did that for their next trick they will be aiming for the left temple.

Holding it with the right hand no doubt

While tap dancing on the foot they just shot.

In the long run it doesn't matter, I smell $2000.00 quad core processors within 3 years. :D

Intel boosted its share of global microprocessor revenues 4.5% from the fourth quarter to 80.2% of the total market, industry analysts at iSuppli said on Friday in a report.

I assume the 6% figure is unit/volume.

Vern, this 4.5% or 1/3 of the marketshare, came from preliminary estimates from iSuppli the day of earnings, Mercury Research is what most firms financial as well as the manufacturers use to reflect marketshare -- the %s are a bit different because iSuppli quoted total unit share for any microprocessor, Mercury Research quotes only x86 CPUs between the three major x86 makers (Intel, AMD, and Via).

Regardless, a 1 quarter swing of 6% back to Intel is hard to believe except that it explains a great deal of the earnings data as well as explains AMD's pricing behavior in Q1 (they dropped prices 3 times).

In effect, it would appear that AMD gave back all of the market segment share gains it achieved for the entire 2006 FY. This is pretty remarkable.... something more is going on here than just Core 2 Duo...

I wonder if Intel has changed some of the marketing approaches??

Jack

The marketing of Intel is worth investigation

Two more points to note:
1. The c/p ratio curve for processors from both companies are very similar. The price should not affect the market in this extent.
2. The channel partners of AMD did complain the instability of stock.

Of which, Intel increased across the board --- most damange in the server arena...

JP Morgan also cited Mercury data as showing that Intel gained 8 percentage points of share in the desktop segment, about 4 points of share in notebooks, and 7 points in the market for server computers.

Eh? BTW, do you know unit % of desktop/server/mobile and revenue % of those?

You fools? Do you not believe the righteous words of the holy prophet the Honorable Shakirou? The Honorable Shakirou says that the righteous and pure AMD is rearing back to deliver holy justice to the devil that is Intel. Believe the words of the good prophet and be saved!

If anyone couldn't tell, that is satire.

Unless they're all insider traders, the people investing are clearly glass half full people or complete idiots (except for those noting those trends and are shorting everyday to make quick bucks).

Either Barcelona is incredibly awesome and someone's leaked that info, or people are morons. The latter is often more true than I enjoy, but there has to be more to it than that. People aren't THAT stupid. I agree with the recent analyst evaluation - AMD is a junk bond company from a debt/earnings perspective. That Ace in their sleeve better be made of platinum.

I think they'll do it. I don't know how right now, but I think they'll do it. If not through technology, then through guerilla marketing.

no one in their right minds wants to say AMD lost 1/3rd; thats devastaing news for interested parties in the face of horrendous delays and excruciatingly painful, costly errors in judgement.

Reorganization will likely reach the upper tier of management this year in nov. The old days and ways of marketing will come to an end to capitalize on new partnerships. You can sell amd chips they work well its a good product for its age.

Its not selling because of upper tier idiocy. supplying the channel should come hand in hand with screaming to the world "hey we have good stuff too."

There is no doubt --- AMD is struggling :) .... only Shakiraboob could believe otherwise....

But judging from the stock behavior over the last couple of days, I would say people think they have reached bottom. I cannot understand why a company that surprises with more and more bad news continues support in their stock unless there is an investor sentiment that 13-14 is the bottom.

To put things into perspective, even though AMD shares have rebounded the last couple weeks, the company's market cap is currently 8.01 billion dollars.

By comparison, nVidia's mkt cap is $11.72B.

AMD + ATI < nVidia???

That doesn't translate into much investor confidence in what AMD has done methinks.

Another way of looking at it is like this:

New AMD (8.01B) - ATI (5.5B purchase price) = AMD (2.5B)
