I do not know what going on in Umax. The saying that Microsoft (???) do not have driver for theirs scanners with parallel port. It is absolute lie. Each company should provide driver (if required) and support for there product even if it is out production for few years - other wise they will lose potential future customers.
I been in situation having the Umax Astra 2000P (with parallel port) little more than a year after upgrading from win98 to XP the scanner stop working. I try to find the driver on Umax US webside with no lack. I ask tech support if there will be future driver for Astra 2000P - Microsoft do support parallel driver and there will not have any.
I start to look on the web what people saying about support for Umax scanners with parallel.
A lot of complain about Umax. Most people do not wanna hear about Umax product again.
On http://lhd.datapower.com/db/dispproduct.php3?DISP?699 .
What was surprising that somebody find out driver for Umax scanners with parilla port - in Umax Europe on http://www.umax.de !!!!
There is not only a driver but also instruction how to instal it !!!!? ( http://www.umax.de/?Scanner=a_pp&OS=win_XP&DigiCam=0&SCSI_Karte=0&D_Form=Treiber+suchen )
Basically it is new version of VistaScan Version (V3.55 Parallel port) and inf fils (http://www.umax.de/download/ScanPC/LPT2000.ZIP)
Now the scanner work fine under winXP.
I am not sure what dirty game Umax playing, right now (and in general) it is not right game to play.
I just find out that one chain (Comp USA) do offer any Umax product any more - I wonder why.

Try here at http://www.driverguide.com/. My scanner manufacturer has XP drivers available but they do not work. I found the solution at the above site. Good luck!

your posting was very helpfull....

go to www.umax.de and download the lpt2000.zip. activate your lpt1 in xp, also in bios to both modes with1.7. delete the windows xp twain files (store them somewhere else), but make sure no other program needs them. install the *.zip files via system/hardware through "add scanner" (or similar) and/or install these *.inf files from there. it took me a whole day to figure this out. hope this helps...after all this you can install the downloadable driver which are not compatible with xp. if it doesnt work right away, experiment for the right order of installation on your system. vista access may not run on startup, but scanning is possible after warmup. Dear friends,
I have a umax astra 2000p scanner since year 2000. However somwhere in 2001 it developed a problem and i haven't used it since. From then many o/s have changed & I now use win vista. I did a separate install of Win ME on my old PC to see if the scanner still works - it starts, takes a long time to move the lamp and scan the image, but it scans garbage. I suspect it is a driver / firmware issue. I will use ur above file and see if it helps

Meanwhile if u do read my post, I will be grateful if you can provide any other info / help to me regarding this scanner. I will sincerely appreciate. My contacts - rohinton@gmail.com / 98204 67945

Thanx
