If you updated to the latest driver from Nvidia a couple of days ago try going back to the previous release. The latest driver for Vista 32 is junk.

i didnt update yet. But ur saying not to? i have Vista 64?

Reply to mega1268

I had to uninstall the latest beta Vista 32 driver and go back to the prior. I tried to use the latest several times with reinstalls, etc., but I kept getting blank screens and instability among applications. I'm using the previous Vista 32 driver and all is well. I don't know, maybe you should try a different driver?

If you have Vista 64, then you should use the Vista 64 driver. If you're using the 32-bit driver version and it let you install the driver, that's probably the source of your problem. Remove the driver completely, then go get the latest Vista 64 driver.

If that doesn't work, check your temperatures for CPU, GPU, and chipset. Try backing your overclock down to lower settings, maybe even -gasp- stock speeds. It could be a stability issue.

Hmm.. have you checked you temps???? maybe they are too high and they are causing the hardware to clock down to stay cooler...

another question i have. In vista 64 with my GTS everytime i open and close a certain window the whole screen looks blocky yellow and flashs superquick. I thought it was a vista/driver problem but i updated driver to the 2nd newest 1 and it did nothing. Then i thought it was my slow monitor with crappy refresh rate and i got 1 with 5 ms refresh and it still does it. Any1 else have this?

What power supply do you have?

You are dealing with a driver configuration problem.Un-install your video drivers, restart in safe mode, and then re-install them.Hopefully that will fix your problem.Goodluck.

Well what resolution are you running at? And are you running with all the sliders to max? If so, Stalker uses over 600mb of Vram at those settings, which your card obviously doesn't have. I got the same thing in dark messiah at max settings my 8800gts 320mb just didnt have enough memory, so now i just got my 8800gts 640, and i have no problems.

Reply to Allenn812

no im just playing on high settins not maximum. NO Antialising not really anything is 100%

Reply to mega1268

Did you patch stalker?

Reply to Stewartwi

This might sound like a basic question, but is the 6pin PCI express power connector attached firmly to your card? I ask this because the game is running fine inside but then when you go outside the card needs to draw and calculate longer distances. The card can only pull about 75watts max from the PCI Express slot which might be enough to get the game going till it needs more power for the outside areas. If the cable is securely attached it could be your power supply failing or lack of power on the 12 volt rail. What type of power supply do you have? How much wattage and how many amps are on the 12 volt rail?

I had the exact same problem with stalker.. I lowered all settings.. but same problem.. however when I pushed the lighting distance slider to max, suddenly the game ran really smooth! Then I was able to push everything else to max and game still ran well.. including full dynamic lighting.

Stalker is a b*tch of a game, kinda wish i'd never got it. It's dodgy to run and IMO the gameplay is crap.

Patch 1.1 caused more problems than fixes. When i patched Stalker it always crashed after 5mins(when i got to the exact same bridge everytime) but unpatched it ran stable(ish).

Reply to desolationw

i dont remember the brand but i think its a 500W power supply. Could that really be the problem. I run FEAR COH and a bunch of other games 100% settings with full AA AF settings and it barley phases it. Stalker on the other hand. Doesnt matter what setting i run it on. Its fritzy jumpy. With No AA OR AF, and it crashs every five seconds. I tried changing patchs on the game to the new 1.01 and it still sux.

Reply to mega1268

I also read somewhere that Stalker optimises itself after around 3-4 plays, i.e. keep settings the same -> load game -> play -> quit to windows -> load game again.....

Some people have reported that this solves some problems... making sure settings remain constant throughout..

not sure if this works, but worth a shot.

Reply to coronaz

if you drop down to low fps and then it goes back up its because the game is preloading itself into ram. I have the same problem and im running on an x2 4800+ @2.8 with 2gb corsair xms and 7900gto 512mb

the game was super buggy at release, dload and install all the patches, and use this tweak guide to help your performance:

What happens if you disable dynamic lighting?

Go back to XP vista SUCKS and games for the most part run horrible. Vista gave me a 1 on the eval of my system but I got a score of 11328 in 3dmark06

Reply to NamronSllim

i just noticed in my Task manager and my core 1 core 2 and ram On idle on my windows vista. And at idle my Ram is at 46%........ and im like wtf normally its 20's.. So i open it up and i have a bunch of SVCHOST.exe which is host process for windows services. I never seen this before. how the hell do you get rid of it.

Reply to mega1268

ok i added up all the SVHOST.exe Useage. its about 115,000 K. That seems like alot no? Everytime i close it it wont stay closed.

Reply to mega1268

you won't get rid of the svchost processes. Might want to check which services you might not need though. But some svc's are completely normal. Might want to check that or just google it...

http://www.computerhaven.info/svchost.htm

Reply to aziraphale

yea i have alot of them. 1 itself is 105,000k at idle i have 1.05 GB ram used at idle with no aol no IE no nothing. Thats never happened.

Reply to mega1268

Well; there are some bad boys out there that disguise themselves as svc processes. Mostly they contain some spelling errors in the process name. However there are some that look real. I suggest you run the following (trusted and widely recommended) two programs: (adaware and spybot)

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/product [...] rsonal.php

http://www.spybot.info/

(Forgive me if I ask; but you are using up to date virus protection and a decent firewall I suppose...)

Reply to aziraphale

yes i ran adaware i ran windows defended and i have norton legit version.

Reply to mega1268

man so i got down to 23% idle ram. But when i go into the game i get 5 fps on high and even medium on levels i havent been on yet and reloading and reloading does nothing. The only time the game plays 100% smooth and doesnt take 15 min to load is when its on low. Then it runs great........... doesnt look good thou.

Reply to mega1268

Hey... Sorry to interject here.. but how bad will Stalker pwn my rig?? I'm guessing my 7900GT with be the biggest problem?

Reply to fender22

If you have a good copy of XP 32 us it if you have 64 it sucks a bad as vista but get rid of vista give it a year or 2 and then try again

Reply to NamronSllim

ok now im running it fine. i dropped down from full lighting and full grass to 50% grass and it loads 100x quicker and runs supersmooth. Also updated the driver. that prolly helped 2.

Xp pro 32-bit... sry..

Reply to fender22

you will probably have to cut the Dynamic lighting and 1024x768 no aa or af you should really up the vid card to r600 or 8800gts 640 there is alot of anomiles that look like distortions and they constantly run and the draw on the system alot but you still should be able to run it my son has the 8800gts 640 and its TIT'SSSSS

Reply to NamronSllim

is your "." key broken?

Reply to aziraphale

ooooooopppppppssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply to NamronSllim

No, it is that your system can't handle high settings on STALKER.

Reply to proof

Ok.. w/e I don't plan on upgrading for while... But how will it look on "mediumish" settings compared to other popular titles that I run on max/high... Oblivion FEAR and the regulars...

Reply to fender22

You are saying you play Oblivion at max?

1280x1024 HDR... NO AA... max draw distances max textures modded distace textures (less blurry more clear) slightly thinned grass... and ya... thats it.. usually 25 FPS.. but there are the spikes to 15 but no lower... i usually run around 25-30 FPS forest.. a nice bit more in towns and inside....

I will usually give up a setting or 2 if I have to to get a 1280x1024 res... like on carbon....

So yeah.. I do run almost max... I can deal with that FPS on Oblivion. But no carbon I can't stand below 40ish

So at 12x10.. how good can I run stalker? with at least a solid 30+ and how will it look compared to other games on high.. I guess im asking.. is stalker on medium/what I can run at, simliar to other games I run high? Or is Stalker a bit bloated in terms of Performace/Eyecandy ratio..

Reply to fender22

u got a 7900gt?? u should run stalker fine enough, jsut get the game and play it on whatever settings. and if u get a new pc 2 years from now?? just beet it again on maxed settings

This current system will just receive upgrades.. or at least I hope i can go that path.. and i hope agena or w/e its called now to work good with am2 and ddr2.. oh and sry to jack the thread in any way.....

Reply to fender22

So, If anyone cares.. I got stalker.. I run at around 35 FPS @ 12x10, full dynamic lighting, 50 draw distance, 80% object detail, 50% grass, 100% texture.. NO AA, NO AF (but do I really need AF when HDR is on with full dynamic lighting?? And I read that AA doesn't really work) Sun Shadow, No grass shadow.. 40% lighting distance, 80% shadow quality, No V sync, 60HZ.. (What if I turn off the 60HZ???)

So yeah.. It still looks good, and gameplay is fun and also challenging.. Quite creepy at times too, I hate that cat cry in the night.... :(

Reply to fender22

... No, nobody cares.

Just kidding. Good stuff.
