One interesting reason to choose Vista is for the security features of 64-bit.
A second reason to choose 64 bit is if you do something that requires more than 4GB of memory.
It seems to me that if you are going to live with Vista incompatibility and can get by for now with mainstream applications, that you may be better off installing 64-bit to get started down that path.
I had run 64 bit XP Pro for a year until I got so sick of patching finding alternatives and not being able to use my $600 laser printer I said F it and went back to 32 no problems since......I wish they would get their 64 bit act together...not microsoft but all the other comapanies too lazy to build drivers. :x
The only way to move to 64bit and have the hardware companies all making 64bit drivers is if the next edition of MS operating system is only available in a 64bit version. That way there will only be the need for hardware companies to make one version of the drivers (provided there are no longer viable 32bit processors on the market).
(Ps: I really don't know much about this, so what I wrote could be completely wrong)
I see it as 64-bit being the future so I might as well put my x64 CPU to some use and actually use a 64 bit OS. All of my hardware devices & peripherals have 64 bit drivers so going from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Vista Business was no problem at all.
I agree. 64bit support has gotten better, and with Vista, I'm sure it will continue to be a non issue!
I just read an article that manufacturers may first be releasing 64b drivers next quarter or later for their hardware because Vista64 is only being installed on about 18% (or less after reinstalls) of new installs. Delays like that should keep most users on Vista32 for at least the next year, if not longer. Vista64 may be cutting edge, but if you read the forums about all the issues with it, I think a lot of people are seriously upset about the situation and are going back to Vista32 until they solve their support issues.
Yeah, I've read the forums and feel for all the people who are having problems. I myself, have had very little difficulties with Vista 64. Really the only problems are with games at the moment.
Again, it all comes down with what you feel more comfortable with. If you know a lot about computers (especially your own setup), then go with the 'cutting edge'. If you want better support, stick with the 32 bit.
Its always worth checking that vista 64 has the drivers you need. I think it has loads more then xpx64. I upgraded from xpx64 to vistax64 and finally managed to get my canon i850 running (w/out having to use my laptop).
Now if netgear would make vista drivers for the sc101 ...........
Seriously, what is with the wireless nic man. not putting out driver support for Vista. Linksys is doing a horrible job with it and so is D-Link - either their drivers are junk or there are none to be found on their website. That was the last straw that made me jump back to Vista32 - there were no Vista32 or Vista64 drivers for my nic, but at least the XP drivers were incredibly stable on Vista32. Once the wireless Vista64 drivers become stable, I may try again.
