I am a gamer and want to keep my main rig connected to the modem via ethernet. My wife wants to use the internet (always when im playing of course). Is it possible to stay hardwired, add a wireless router for her laptop, and both stay connected at the same time?

You can stay hardwired, but it will be too the router, not modem. Hook up the router by plugging the ethernet cable that is in your computer now to the internet port on the router then the wireless router will have a port to run back to your computer. Then other pcs can connect via wireless.
