I am following Sanji's Guide to Gaming PCs on a Budget ($500 build)here: http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/Sanji-Guide-Gaming-PCs-Budget-ftopict228067.html

Absolutely AMAZING job he did, BTW!!!

**********
Here are the parts I plan on ordering:

Motherboard: BIOSTAR TFORCE 550 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 550 MCP ATX AMD $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138026

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Brisbane 1.9GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 $65.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103036

Memory: Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) $53.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134045
Switch to the DDR2 800 instead of 667

GPU: EVGA 256-P2-N615-TX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 $109.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130062

CPU Cooler: Thermaltake CL-P0114 120mm CPU Cooler $44.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835106061

Thermal Paste: Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound $5.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16835100007

Grand Total with 2gb RAM: $413.94 +S/H

This is my old Power Supply: Thermaltake 430W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023

This is the one he suggested: Hiper Type-R 480w
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817128005

Any reason I cannot just use my old power supply? I will not have any peripherals hooked up (ie scanners, printers, cameras, etc.) This computer is just for gaming.

One other thing: Any reason not to use the DDR2 800 RAM? This ram has same latency and timing as the set Sanji suggested for nearly the same price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098

Does it interfere with overclocking potential?

I should probably buy a couple of case fans as well. My case has 2 inch x 2 inch mounting holes. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot for any advice, you guys and this community are amazing!

Cheers!

Your PSU should be fine, barely though, but it's fine. And switching to DDR2-800 is definitely a good idea, AMD systems shouldn't be run on anything slower.

Hey thanks for the quick reply, jeff_2087 and evongugg!

I appreciate the help, but your words gave me a little worry, so I decided to digg deep for the extra coin and bought the recommended Power Supply from Sanji's Guide. I changed the CPU from the OEM to the Retail version. I don't know why, I just had a feeling. At the same time, I switched from the DDR2 667 to the DDR2 800, as you suggested. I also decided to buy a new case (My old case is 6-7 years old!), but opted to spend a little bit more on it, since I am already comitted to building a solid machine. The new case has a screen filter to keep out the dust! Kool!. Sure, this RIG is not the best, but it's a far sight better than my AMD Athlon XP 2200+, 1GB RAM, and 128mb Geforce FX 5200! LOL! Actually, it wasn't a bad computer ....I was able to play Oblivion on it with the Oldblivion shader mod, but it's time to turn it into a LAMP backup, since it is no longer useful for current generation gaming.

My revised Part List:

Motherboard: BIOSTAR TFORCE 550 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 550 MCP ATX AMD $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138026

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Brisbane 1.9GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor - Retail $69.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103036

PSU: HIPER|HPU-4M480-PS 480W RT - Retail $49.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817128005

CASE: COOMAS|CAC-T05-UB BLK/BL RT - Retail $49.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811119047

MEM: 1Gx2|G.SK F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ R - Retail $109.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231098

GPU: EVGA 256-P2-N615-TX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 $109.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130062

CPU Cooler: Thermaltake CL-P0114 120mm CPU Cooler $44.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835106061

Thermal Paste: Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound $5.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16835100007

Total: $519.93
S/H: $31.08

Grand Total: $551.01

I already commited the order, so it's too late to change anything, now. I hope I didn't make any mistakes! LOL

I am extremely surprised and happy that RAM has gotten so cheap. Wasn't it only a couple months ago, that they charged about 100 bucks per 1gb stick? I just got 2 x 1 GB for near that price!

Anyway, thanks a million for the good advice. You guys are awesome!

Cheers!

P.S. When I get the parts I'll stop in and post an update. I hope none are DOA! hehe
