You will only be able to run an HD DVD or Blu-ray movie through an analog (VGA), not a digital (DVI) cable.
As far as regular DVDs and games, it makes no difference. You can use whatever output you like.
But how does the blue-ray picture look in analog?? Does'nt that defeat the purpose? Damn, why do I have the feeling im about to have to buy another LCD monitor. I'm new to this problem. I just picked up a blue-ray DVD from FRYS on sale for 70.00. It requires alot of resourses to run the blue-ray. My system is pretty strong(5.7 In Vista performance). I cant run the VGA plug even if i wanted to. My graphics card has two DVI plugs! No plugins on the board. I have extended desktop set up and both monitors are LCD! I guess im screwed twice....LOL. This forum is pretty cool, informative. Im going to sign up now. Thanks for letting me read in.

Analog via VGA is high def. I use VGA with 1080P and it looks perfect. You might need software to get around encryption but it'll look fine (I don't use blu-ray, just TV via SageTV. But really it shouldn't be an issue since it's analog). You can get a DVI to VGA cable or a dongle should work too (haven't tried that myself).
Also to get 1080P make sure your video card can do the proper resolution for your monitor.
