Newbie question.. I am seriosuly thinking of building my own box concidering the recent price drop on the Q6600 to around $500. But with all the issues of cooling, I was thinking why not just buy an external box and mount the power supply in it? I am guessing a good 700w PS produces a good amount of heat. Is this not practicle?? I am looking at installing the system in a closet anyway with wireless keyboard/mouse on desk. Looking for a clean install. Thanks for your help.

Hey jburrows500,

A 700w produces a good amount of heat, yes, but isn't most of it is usually pushed out of the case right away in a properly ventilated case?

I wonder how much it really affect the overall temperature, and if that difference outweight the hassle of the twin box design and all the wiring trouble.

If your computer is in a closet, ambiant temperature may rise.

I'm also in the process of building a case from scratch, and I try different design before proceeding. Let us know if you try it.

BTW, welcome to the forum.
