I need some advice on the 8600GTS model. Here is the link at zipzoomfly...

MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC GeForce 8600GTS

The price doesn't sound bad at all. My question is, how does that card compare to an ATI RadeOn 9800 Pro 128MB AGP 8X card? I was looking into the RadeOn X1950 Pro but when I saw the 8600GTS for under $200 I decided to compare the specs and the price for both cards is within $15, as the x1950 Pro is $175. They are similar in specs somewhat (except for the memory amount and bus difference). Since I don't have an 8600GTS to test, I don't know how it will perform in real-life compared to my 9800 with games such as Oblivion, Just Cause, LOTR: Battle For Middle Earth, etc.

How critical is the memory bus on the 8600GTS, being 128-bit vs the 256-bit 9800 Pro? I have two $100 bills (lol) which means I've got a strict $200 budget and cannot go over. Do you think the x1950 Pro would be better overall than the 8600GTS? Please advise. Thanks.

The X1950Pro and GF8600GTS are close to each other and while Oblivion favour the GTS a bit, most other games favour the X1950Pro. The thing is the X1950Pro can be found for less than $175, which would affect the comparo IMO.

If you had a credit for ZZF and had to buy from those two with a $15 difference, then I'd say go with the GTS, but since it's fresh cash why not get a cheaper card of NewEgg

But the X1950Pro at NewEgg are $130-140, so that's a bit more of a price difference;

If you don't like Powercolour for $130 , there are other models in that price range.

This is exactly what I'm waiting for,WOW what a price reduction ...If your not intending to play a dx10 game than the x1950 pro looks like a great buy. But I would wait just a few more days until the release of the 2900xt,looks like those cards will be cheaper yet...gl :D .

Well, I'm torn somewhat because of the idea of going dx9 and then a flood of good games come out coded for dx10 and then I'm not able to take advantage of those features. After comparing the hardware specs on those cards, the x1950 pro looks like a very solid card for the $$$. I'll check out newegg tonight to see their selection. I'll be doing a mb, cpu, memory upgrade in order to be able to get one of these video cards, as I'm stuck on an aging and maxed out Socket A, AGP 8x based platform. Thanks for the input.

Yeah the competition is fierce and the market is flooded. I'm curious how pricing on high end DX9 cards will change in the upcoming weeks, through the end of may. I haven't read much about the upcoming models from ATI. I assume the 2900XT is the successor to the 1950XT model? Thanks for the input.
