Ok heres an interesting issue I'm having. I can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows brings up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by using the windows button + r on the keyboard. This affects the "Search" and "Help & Support" commands too. It is annoying not having that function when needed... No virii or spyware involved. I believe it's a registry issue, but I've no idea were to correct the issue and I can't find any info on the net[which is a first]. Do any of you guys or gals have any ideas?

Do a repair install to overwrite your system files.

CD in - boot to it - press Enter at the first repair screen - press R at the next repair screen. Do not boot to cd the next two restarts.

Well gee wiz, Sparky, I hadn't thought of that...

Ya, not doing the whole repair install, which would involve reinstalling certain apps, drivers and resetting all of my personalized configs, for just one minor annoyance. And, Sparky, it's not a corrupt dll or I'd be having other problems too. But thank you for the generic call center tech support answer...

The assistance I was looking for was more of a registry fix, since I'm not having any other issues. And unlike most people I've no problem digging into the registry. It's not as scary as people think.

Well I don't know about the whole registry thing but. . . Maybe its your user account. Try another account on the same PC. As I'm sure you know the start menu is a costimizable part of every user account. XP stores your user account configuration in both the registry and in your userprofile (start run %userprofile%). There is a little trick I like to use with a corrupt profile... Just rename it in c:\documents and settings\. If you rename it there, you will save all your files and XP will not recognize your account being present next time you log in.

Interesting, idea. Tried it but that didn't work. Because of the way the problem is behaving, I'm very sure it's a registry issue.

Hmm Sorry to hear that. If google does help you, there is always system restore if you are stuck in a tight spot. I know the registry enough to get around but not enough to solve your problem. And yah I have to agree with you as long as your not a complete idiot and randomly delete reg keys or something the registry isn't all that bad. . .
