Virus hates on my internet connection

I'm trying to fix a friends computer.. and i've seemed to run into a brick wall.

Yes there were about 1000 variants of trojans, random viruses, and adware. Most of them are gone, but i'm having an interesting problem..

I can connect to Aim, but not the internet through IE or Mozilla.. i've searched for rootkits can't find anything.

The people do, however, use 56k Aol Dial up if anyone thinks there could be a problem...

I'm stuck.. if anyone has had some experiences with this stuff let me know..
