Hi,
My Western Digital 250GB 8MB cache drive is running at . . . 72c!!!

Just seems wierd, maybe incorrect temps? How can it be so hot and yet pass SMART test? I have four WD drives in total, the other 3 HDD temps are good (about 40c).
BTW, its installed with a Zalman HDD Passive Cooler, I used to have it in front of a 120mm fan and it was very hot there aswell.
I was thinkin maybe outdated firmware?
Can anyone shed some light on why it is 72c, or why it thinks it is 72c? Any help appreciated :D  .

With some of the WD2500JS drives there are problems with the temperature probe not being calibrated correctly from the factory. Usually they read 20-25c over what they should, this being the most extreme case that I've seen. I myself have one that likes to run at 52c. I would seem to think that your drive is not anywhere near that hot, just a highly miscalibrated probe. There is a quick test for this. Have the hard drive out in the open or somewhere you can touch it when it is running. At that temperature you would not be able to touch it without burning yourself. If you can actually touch and handle the drive, then you are fine. I would think that the latter would be the case.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!!

I felt the drive while it was running, it did not feel like 70c, but was still quite hot. So your probably right,

Is that common with the WD1600JS? Mine is currently reading 70c while my WD2500KS next to it is only reading 54c.
