Ok I am confused with the above topic. I originally had a OEM copy of Windows XP Pro and I then bought the upgrade home version of Vista Home Premium.
My question is if I have to do a compleate wipe out and reinstall do I have to install XP Pro back on and then do a upgrade to Vista again.
If thats the case what a pain in the #$%.

Or can I use the Vista disk and when I register it will know that I had upgraded?

Any help would be great.

READ your damned post out loud to someone. It makes no sense.

If you have XP Pro running on ur system right now, all you need to do is put the Vista upgrade disc in and go from there.

If you wiped your hard drive, then yes, you need to reinstall XP and then upgrade to Vista. There is a 2nd option, but it's just as much of a pain in the arse as the first. You're better off just installing XP and then upgrading to Vista.

Man some people are not really friendly around here.
All I was asking was that if I needed to reinstall my Vista Home Premium Upgrade do I have to start from scratch and reinstall Windows Xp and then do the up grade to Vista again.
Mabey you should not answer forum questions if you have attitued like that. i would rather fix the problem myself then get bitched at by someone I dont know!

I believe the answer is no. If you originally installed your vista “upgrade” onto your XP you now have Vista. Run the install again right onto the current Vista.

The Vista upgrade disk gives you an option of doing a “clean” upgrade; meaning it will wipe out ANY remnants of your XP o.s. and you get a “clean” Vista with no carry over settings, documents email addresses etc. from your past XP o.s. (or for that matter if you do a “clean” reinstall of Vista onto your Vista you will LOSE every setting document, email or any programs you have loaded onto your Vista).

I choose not to do it clean because I have a pc from Gateway and I only have one disc that came with it being the recovery disc. (That recovery disc in order to work must have a corresponding partition hard drive in order to recover the XP o.s. that came from the Gateway factory) If I were to do a “clean” installation of my Vista Home Premium Upgrade onto my pc, I just as well throw away my XP recovery disc because I will have nothing on the disc to recognize it. I think I understand your concern, meaning, can you reinstall Vista onto/over Vista…I think so yes…

There are two kinds of people on these posts. One is willing to go out of their way and help people with questions.....The other is to be a a cocky poster who thinks that the world revolves around them because they gave you a answer.
Mpjesse is the latter. Mpjesse I never asked you for help, and if you did not like my post you had a choice not to answer.
You might want to take lessons from Lexonex on how to reply to questions!

An update on my journey of installing Vista Home Premium as an “upgrade” to my Windows XP; I had many issues initially but, doing a “clean” installation AFTER saving my documents, email address and pictures to a removable external hard drive, REALLY helped. That (clean installation) returned my high definition sound to all applications and fixed my email always asking for a password problem. Oh and by the way after you have done a “clean” installation you can NOT go back and do a reinstall—it kept saying after I typed in my Vista Product Key # “use your current Windows”…They only way out was to go to a restore point (why was a reinstallation needed? I was running non-compatible software and my two CD/DVD drives became unrecognized……Anyway going to a restore point fixed it)..BE SURE AND SAVE YOUR XP RECOVERY DISK…

I am not sure but, if you really did want to do a "reinstall" I think you might have to put XP back up and go from there......Try a restore point FIRST......

(she/he did you a favor...Her/His ONLY relationship is with his/her PC...Gets her/his kicks on bashing posters...(Real power for you honey?)...Perfect example of what kind of people to AVOID....Best of Luck to You....Let me know if I was any help)

I already fcuking said that. I also said this:

In that statement I was refering to the idiodic idea of installing Vista twice... which is what you tried to do. As I already said, you're better off installing XP first, then Vista.

Regardless of whether or not my only relationship is with my computer, i know what the fcuk i'm talking about. So piss off.

If you do a clean install just install Vista twice, the first time skipping
putting in the product key. It takes time but it's easy.

The advantage is if you have another hard drive you can dual boot XP
and Vista. The reason that is a good idea is that you can take your time
and still play games and use hardware that is not Vista friendly yet.

SO the best idea is to buy a new drive with Vista Retail Home Premium.
Not installing over Xp gives you the option of having your old XP around
and not getting pissed about bad drivers..bad audio in some games etc.

I see your logic, but you can still do the same thing if you install XP and then Vista. Once Vista finishes installing just reinstall XP on said 2nd drive. Either way your installing an OS 3 times to get dual boot.

I recommend installing XP first because it's faster. Installing Vista twice will be a test of anyone's patience. ;-)
